A MILLIONAIRE MI»Elt.
One ul'CUicago’u Celebrities Sent to Jail
lor Street Begging. *<
Peter Mueller, an oul man re¬
puted to be worth $750,000, was
yesterday sent to the Bridewell tor
sixty days for begging on the
streets. For many years Mueller
and his wife lived in a miserable
hovel on the banks of the Illinois
and Michigan canal, in the town¬
ship ct Cicero. They lived in a
most miserable manner, denying
themselves everything except what
was absolutely necessary to keep
them alive. Many stories were told
by the neighbors of their reputed
wealth, and one night about four
years ago four masked men entered
tbe hovel and demanded the “pot
of gold” the old couple were be¬
lieved to keep therein. Mueller
end his wife protested that they
bed no money. Then the robbers,
by tbe most horrible tortures,
sought to drew from them the se
cret of the hiding place of the
treasure, but ia vain. The next
day the Muellers were found almost
dead by the neighbors. Their feet
were terribly burned and their bod
|.»a covered with bruises and cats
ii dieted by the miscreants.
Mueller for several years patt
has made a practice of begging on
the streets, and about a year ego
was kcked up one night. Next
tucruiug the justice, moved by
oompasHon t>y the old roan 1 * piti-
ful tale, discharged him from cus¬
tody. tVhen Moeller returned to
his miserable home he found the
dead body of his wife hanging to a
rafter. It was supposed she hsd
worried so over her husband's ab
senee—the first during their mar
ried life—that in a moment of
great despondency she bad taken
her own life. Smog |fr»p Mueller
has lived all aloqp in the shanty,
making no changes lb hi? mode of
living. Sunday he made such a
nu’sance of himsedf, begging in
front of St Francis chuu-h, that an
officer arrested him. Yesterday in
the justice court be refused to
auewer any questions or to pay
the fine imposed and was sent to
the Brihe well. Mueller owns 520
acres of land in sections 31 and
36, and ie possessed of stocks and
bonde worth several hundred thou
sands of dollars.—Macon Tele

Alliancemen, when you gain one
gtep in your reform movement,
don't falter and grow weary but
take new courage and keep press¬
ing forward; to accomplish any¬
thing of importance it requires
perseverance; the re is no stand still
station ou the road to eucces; if you
whip tho enemy it must be done
on an advance movement. Let
your already achievements stimu¬
late and actuate you to that zeal
necessary to meet the foe. Feej
that ic is your unbounded duty to
attend each meeting of your lodge;
discuss and solve questions that
are vital to yonr order's growln,
and endeavor to inculcate and
instill principals in the minds
your children that they may per
peluate the great work that
been pul in operation. The influ¬
ence of this older is not only felt in
the radius of the farmer's
and behind the curtains in the
alliances, but it spreads out m
mammoth proportions throughout
this broad Jand of ou^s, from sea
to sea, aud from North to
in town and country and you may
look up, for the tidal wave is up
on us—the work has begun and the
great efforts must never relax.
One great trouble with the farmer
is, that they expect resnlts t,o»
soon and are inclined to give up in
despairevtii when the harvest is
ripe. No great work can be ac
com plished ia a moment. It is the
faithful that are rewarded in the
end.
