A machine has been invented
which is claimed to have
capacity of picking
pounds of cotton in ten hours.
It is said that iip offer will
be made by a syndicate
$14,000,000, to the government
for Alaska, with a view
setting up a government of its
own iu that Arctic dependency
and develop its resources.
Tho estimates of tho Secretary
of the Treasury of appropriations
required for the servies of tho fis
cal year ending June 30, 1892, call
for more than $135,000,000 or pay¬
ment of pensions, an appropriation
four tunes larger than that asked
for auy other purpose. This, it
must be remembered is for pen
•ions alone. To provide for pay
fpent of fees and expenses of the
pension examining surgeons $1,
^00,000 is desired; for the support
of the pension agencies $590 000 is
demanded, tor pa>mants of special
pension examiners $ 300,000 more,
3 pd for theiuuning of the pension
pflice pioper $2-515,210. Unless
the dependent pension act is te
pealed, which is not probable, ali
these estimates will have to be al¬

will cofit the people of the United

To the voters of Murray
county: During my canvass lor
the clerkship ol Murray coun¬
ty. about ten days ago, I was
taken sick and have been con¬
fined to my bed ever since and
in all probability will not be
able to be up until after the
election. I earnestly insist and
beg. that my friends do not
allow their interest in my be¬
half to relax but that more
vigorous efforts may be used
in promoting my claims. I
trust to the mercy of my friends.
Respectfully,

After three months absence I »m
at. home again, thero i s nothing
like being at home. Wo try to
feel at home when we are among
onr dearest friends. Many times
we are requested to make ourselves
at home, etc ; but the impression is
far from the one we have when
we sit quietly by our own fireside
and listen to tho sweif but feeble
voice of mother and father, Though
old ago is honorable, yet I can‘ l
help but to feel sad when I see pa
and ma turning so gray. The evn
ning of life is drawing on. But
there is a sweet little poem which
save:
Then let n* strew their path with flowers,
While they oa earth remain,
For soon they’ll roach the fadeless bowers,
Whore all is youth again.
Boys even when you are mar.y
miles away make it your business
to got> see your parents, do m t
regard time or expense. They are
well spent; and some day when
the word rendu s you, flushed over
the wires that your father or moth¬
er is gone, you will not regret Hit
many hours of travel spent in go
Sorr to see them. Many boys
grow so f-sL h ,t by tl e tin e they
are sixteen they are so large t at
tl ev afo ashamed to sn, p i »•
ma; but whnt do they i y, listu and
you will hear them, in peaking ol
of their pa, say “tlie old man”
said so and so, or of their mothtr
“the old woman” did to and so.
Boys think, and don't be guilty of
such an expression.—Ex,
There has been no time in the
history of our state when the saw
and ax have made such a war on
her pine timber. The forests are
being laid waste with great rash
and rapidity by lnmber men, and
at the present rate, in a very short
time onr grand old state will be
stripped of her valuabla timber
and ere long we will have to nave
lumber imported to supply the
demand of the Georgia workmen.
This is one of the coming mann«
factoring states and her timber is
needed at home. What can be
done to stop the great efflux of
lumber,?
