JAMES DUCK.
Little Jim, a duckling batched in a
lien’s nest, the children took from his
stepmother and brought into the house
for a pet, and a loving pet he made!
They declared he was better than any
cat they had ever had. Ho soon
8 cemed to think he could not exist
without them,except in the night,when
he slept in a box in the kitchen. He
appearod particularly loud of one of
the little girls; Yvould jump into her
lap whenever she sat down, and nestlo
comfortably, ivith 6oft “peep, peep,”
until, at last, tucking head under
wing, he would go soundly to sleep,
while the little mistress stroked him
as gently as if lie had boon a kitten.
Sometimes lie , ivould try to
find his way into the neck or the sleeve
of her dress, and liked to get close
to her face as possible; and then
Jim was belter than any cat, for he
caught the flies as they buzzed about,
and wiien they became numerous
enough to alight on the windows his
little mistress would take him in her
arms and hold him in sueh position
that be could snap up every fly. Left
alone in a room he would “peep,
peep” pitifully until sdme one re¬
turned, when he Yvould run to meet
the person, with glad, exultant ring
in his “peep, peep.” Many a time he
tried to follow the children to school,
and had to bo gathered up and kept
prisoner at home. Though only a
few days older than other ducklings
on the farm, ho became almost twice
as large. Soon Jim began to sport a
curly feather in his tail, and yvc kncYV
he was a drake; but to us he always
seemed different from other ducks—
more gentle, loving, confiding. Some
farmers do not like ducks, because
“they eat their heads off,” and indeed
they are always ready to eat. Many
farmers in South Jersey are now rais¬
ing white ducks, and express the opin¬
ion that their feathers are as white,
and about as soft as those of the
goose.—[New York Tribuno.
A FUNNY PROBLEM.
A writer in the Examiner tells the
folloYving story: It was a ivarm,
sleepy afternoon, and the scholars in
Miss Plummer’s school looked and
acted as if they ivislied 4 o’clock would
come quickly.
The class in mental arithmetic were
lazily droning through their lesson
Yvhen Deacon Day popped his cherry
face in at the door. Ail the children
loved him, and were glad when he
came to visit the school.
Perhaps ho saw they needed some¬
thing to wake them up, so when the
class was through with the lesson he
gave them this problem:
“If eighteen coyvs were going
through a narrow gate where only
one could pass at a timo, which coyv
could look hack and say, ‘There are
eleven pairs of horns behind me. 7 99
The class thought busily for a min¬
ute, then up came Tommy Taft’s
hand.
“Which one, Tommy?” asked tbe
deacon.
“The seventh.”
“No.”
Another minute of study, then Celif
Brown put up her hand.
“What do you think, Celia?”
“I think it might be the eighth, foi
when the cow turned her head to look
back her own horns would be behind
her. wouluu’t they?”
“No, it isn’t the eighth,” the deacon
said.
About the same time little Johnny
Hartshorn on the front seat began to
snicker.
“What are you laughing at, John¬
ny?” asked Miss Plummer.
“Cows — can’t — talk I” giggled
Johnny.
Deacon Day laughed, too, then.
“Johnny has answered it,” he said.
“None of the cows could do it, of
course.”
Then all the scholars latighcd and
woke up for the rest of the day aDd
