Mr?. P. J. Morgan, a diughter

and i woman of rare intelligence,

a conversation this week gave us
some of the history of the early
days ot the country.wo live in.
In the year 1801 or 5, when tbe
giant oak spread her foliage over
this little plat of fcrlils soil and
the wigwams of the Red man were
in clusters in the forest, and the
life ol ‘he savage was at its zonith

interesting features as well as a
great deal of hard work Over
one hnndred miles of the road
traveled in getting to this point
were made by his party. The Ui

pontoon bridge which he made,
and it was there that the Indian
first heard the missionary talk ot
raligjipn, and from that time he
grew to be the center of attraction
lor tho tribe. In crossing tho river
Mr. Launius ha 1 a tina [marc to
jump off the bridge and swim back
to the opposite bunk. Two silver
coins wore offered one ot the In¬

the animal out. of the brush that

clasped a knilo in his teet h and
plungod the stream; which ,s most
two hundred yards wide, and
swifter than r. duck ho passed over
amt in a tow minutes the animal
was safely landed on Hus side.
When the silver was banded him,
the band of Indians that were
present danced and rejoiced as
would a gray headed father at (he

Mrs. Morgan gave ns many oth¬
