THURSDAY MAY *1, 1891.
The 1st of July ends the coin
age of silver dollars.
The ways of an honest man nev
er go begging for favorable criti
cism.
Let harmony attend your every
action when dealing in communi¬
ty affairs and you will bo surprised
to see the difference in your coun¬
try's prosperity.
Governor Northern has softened
his haart to the task of pardoning
four convicts recently, “There
do“ be a difference in his temper¬
ament and that of tender hearted,
lamented, “little Alec,“
Wnat is the matter with the Cal¬
houn Times? We have not receiv¬
ed a copy of it for the past three
weeks. Let us‘know tho differ
cnee in exchange, Hall, and we
will remit.
It is reported that Sam Jones
is doing wonders in Chattanooga.
He has succeeded, in the conversion
of Editor Shaver ot the News and
will doubtless have an extra star
placed on his crown in the world
beyond.
Georgia boastB of as good laws
ns any of her sister states, but ai e
they always enforced? In our
opinion they ' aro not. It is not
an exception to see an empty jail
and there is not a county in the
state that docs not; contain at least
a few violators of the law.
Hon. L. L. i-oster. of Austin
Tex. is visiting relatives in Ga.
Mr Foster was appointed* with
senator Reagan ‘on tho railroad
commission in that state. Georgia
is his old home and the honors
gained by him in the Lono Star
slate aro vary gratifying to his
Geotgia friends.
A'ol. 1, No. 1, of the Musical Ad¬
vocate of Macon by McIntosh &
Burke is on our table. Iti.is a
sparkling journal publislmd’in the
interest of American music and
teachers, and is at, Ihe editors *.ay
they shall try to make it, “Worthy
o<‘ iFplaco in every family in Amer¬
ica."
1 he president has ended his trip
across the continent, having passed
through a good number of the
southern states on his journey.
We hope his experience has im¬
bued in his mind a more favorable
opinion of cur white population
and it possible blasted his high
esteem for Dixie's niggers.
The Tiibune-ef-liome has been
purchased by Messrs Gardner &
Gross and its name will be changed
tc the Rome Tribune. These yoang
gentlameu have the “rep’’ of be¬
ing Al newspaper men and will
doubtless give Rome a paper in
keeping with the age.
An exchange remarks that a
subscription book which has never
known a delinquent subscriber
would be one of tho greatest of
Georgia curiosities at the world's
fair. Just ro, and the next big¬
gest would be an editor who has
never been pirsuaded to cuss some
of his delinquents.
A great many appointive and
elective courtesies are being shown
the survivors of the late war.
This is all well enough to a ner
tain extent, but we are of tho opin¬
ion that the kids should have a
better show. These old patriots
will not alwaya be able for duly
and the change must be made
sooner or later.
Debt «mong Murray county far¬
mers is bound to he given a black
eye in a tew more years. The
mortgage is bound to go and in
its stead you will see big rolls <>f
green back as the proceeds of ju¬
dicious management and ecow-my
among the people at large. Cash
on a cash basis is the motto and is
sure to win.
Murray county has no railroad
but sue is a hummer all the same
If you will just take a d»m
through the county what is to b.
seen will convince you that lum
is not a fly on our farmers. They
all have corn in their cribs, lut’at
in the smoke house and cotton nn
der the shed. Snow us a bettei
sign of prosperity than this and a
is our treat.
To the outside woiid: If you h^vt
capital fer investment Murray
county is the place lor you come.
We nave all kinds of minerals in
quantities lo suit and if you waul
lo fiud farming laud il is here lor
you. So give us a show and come
around. We will treat you light
and keep the kuhlux oft’. A show¬
ing is all wo ask.
There is a defect in Uncle Sam’s
mail service some where along the
line. Not a single paper was
brought to Spring Place on Mon¬
day. The postmaster at Dalton
either failed to send any out or
they were not there to send. We
know there is "something dead up
the creek u and would like to find
out who is in the fault. Busincs is
busine6 and we want our mail and
that before it is a week old.
Mr. Macr.no, of the National
Economist, Evan Jones president
oi Texas farmers alliance and a
number of other prominent sub
treasury men including the South
era Murcury of Dallas Texas all
seem to be in a pinkie about this
time on account of certain mem¬
bers of the legislature in Texas
condeming their course in tho
management oi alliance matters.
“The way of tho tamsgrossor is
hard,” even in alliance affairs.
Some ol the “big bugs“ in the
farmers alliance say their parly
will not support Grover Cleveland
in ‘92 if lie is nominated for pt evi¬
dent, all because bo does not favor
free-coinage. This will have been
a decided step toward a third party
on the part of the alliance, just
what we have feared from the be¬
ginning. We are in favor of fr;e
coinage but would not sacrifice
our purtv‘rt hopes by opposing the
democratic leader because he dout
see things in the light we do.
We want tho people to know
(hat we are here to do what is in
our opinion best’for Murray county.
Your interest, is our interest, our
success is your suoces.-j so you
should put your shoulder to the
wheel and roll] Moving, hustling,
pluck and enterprise is what, we
need to place our county in front
of the procession, nothing short of’
this will do it. You all know that
we are on an equal footing with
the other counties in North Geor¬
gia. Are we really taking advan¬
tage of our equality? lithe court
knows herself she thinks not. But
it is entirely a fault of our own
that we are not. The prospect for
a long looked for railroad is more
flattering than at any time in the
past. So go to work and don't be
afraid lo turn your money loose cn
improvements for you cannot lose
anything and the chances are that
you would realize a handsome int
erest from any investment in this
line.
Every peace loving citizen in
the county should attend tho mass
meeting in Spring place the first
Tuesday in June. The meeting is
for the purpose of arriving at some
conclusion as to the best method
of ridding the county of her ku
klux, or to at least curb their un
bridled actions of lawlessness.
W© have no earthly use for any
such gangs of men and all should
aid in at once and forever checking
their drunken raids. Wo have an
idea that some good men in our
county are in sympathy with this
particular crew, but it is all a mis¬
taken conclusion that we need ku
klux at tiiis late day ol law and
order. The laws of our country
are such as to apply to every de
sciiption of misdemeanor and
Judge Milner with Solicitor Kite
are the men to enforce them.
There was a time when Regulators
were a great help to our country
but that time has past, and they
are a howling nuisance to the
good peop e of the county. Lei
all i ssisL in the work of disbanding
them and placing the morals of
IVluiray county on a new basis.
