P. has a lot of Chi nese laborers on his place, and one of them, tlio foreman, having saved up about concluded to return to China. The others' rather objected to this procedure on his pa it ami pro posed dividing out the money among themselves, and to that o id made an attack on him. Ho defended himself ai;.ufully but was overpowered “by numbers and shot and cut up quite badly, so .ranch so th .t it is thought he will not recover. Having obtained dm money which he hud in u pouch tied around his waist, they divided it out among themselves, thinking that it was all right. Seven of the number are now in jail awaiting trial. Later—John Chirumnn don’t intend to make a die of it (his time--so said. HOOK COVERS. Some time since we published an ar ticle about our Schools, stating that the switch had been taken out of the hands of the teachers, and instead, ware required to report to parents all misdeineauors, etc. The reporting plan is a good ono if it could be carried out, but its workings prove it n failure is j far os boys urn concerned, ; wo spunk knowingly of the primary department over which wa preside as teacher.) In many oases parents tin not punish ns was expected but simply tell their children not to do so again. Now' if those children are reported to the* Connty School Commissioner, as or dered, they would at once be suspend ed, and if no improvement is percep tible after another trial they would be expelled entirely. Now expulsion is u Tory grave mutter, and should not bo resorted to only-in very desperate coses. In the workings of this plan, however, it may result from minor offenses which could very easily Ik? remedied by, a very slight application of that choice medicine known as “hiekory oil.” Solomon was a very wi -e man, ancl he says use the rod freely or thy boy will go astray. We believe in Solomon, aud would recommend that the hands of the teachers bo untied. Parents want it; the boys themselves ask for it, and the teachers know that it would be fur better for all concerned. Some schools may be ran successfully without the rod but not the Brunswick Public Schools. In our recent article cm this subject we recommended a plan, and, in our judgment, the only One whereby the present system can be carried out. It was this: That tie teachers report promptly, pnrents./fo# immediately , and Trust::* visit the lichools often and show that they sup port the measure. These have not ■Ibcen done. Where the fault lies each must answer for himself. A heartv r. , * co-operation is the only way the pres ent plan can be worked. If this be 'not done, the sooner the rod is placed into the hands of the teachers the bet ter. So say the boys thrmselres. fi«3r*THE steamship Montgomery will arrive at this port on the 20th inst., and the Huntsville on the 27tli, en route for New York.
