—The last steamer t<* N. Y. carried
several bales of cotton—new crop—
from Florida. Tho line will probably
have all it can do in a short time.
There is some talk of putting on an
other steamer to go direct.
—Northeast winds ore not consid
ered favorable along our coast, but
the last blow from that direction has
done good work for us, bringing in
quite a large number of long-looked-
for vessels.
—We saw a pleasing sight on Sat-
. urday afternoon last—Father D. driv
ing down Newcastle street with his
democratic wagon even full of little
girls. ’Twas liard to tell who enjoyed
the ride most.
—That’s right, friends, continue to
send in your jobs. The Advebtiseb
is a public benefactor. Give it your
support.
—So far we have had no bid for our
f amous non-laying-but-ever-setting-
und-clucking “Dominicker”. Fear
ing the price ($9) may be too much,
we now offer her at $6.50. Don’t all
bid at once, for only one can get her.

—Day seems to be breaking finan
cially, and the horrid gloom of night
that has hung over our heads for some
time, passing away, is what some
folks think, but we fear ’tis only, the
flashes from some prowler’s lump, as
he goes his round, seeking whom he
may entrap. We are hopeful, how
ever.
—We know of several men in town
who could improve their business con
siderably by consulting with the Ed
itor of tho Advebtiseb. They ore
Solomons, however, in point of wis
dom, and wont take advice, Why
will people “stand in . their own
light?”
—Fish have been more plentiful
than usual for the past few days.
Among those offered for sale we ob
served several very fine trout. Shrimp
and prawn, too, Beem unusually abun

caught a bushel on one tide. A few
more days now and “oysters will be

wont forget to advertise when they get
back.

We don’t hear of any shipments.
Hope to report something favorable
soon.
—Ten vessels and two steamers ar
rived in port on Friday last. We hear
of probably six others afloat for this
point.

The Reason for Study.—“Well,
sir, papa will flog me if I don’t study
at home, and you will keep me in if I
don't study here, so I thought I would
t,urn over a new leaf and get my les
sons,” is the answer given by one of
the boys of the Public School to his
teacher, when called upon to know
why it was that he had been doing so
much better lately.
That is the right idea, patrons.
See that your children study at home.
Your teachers are trying to do their
duty, but they need your support; •
Shov' your children that you are in-j
terested in their progress; assist them,’’
if needs be, with their lessons, and you
will soon see a marked change for the
better. Some parents think 'their du
ty ends when they furnish their chil
dren with books and send them'jfco
school. Not so, that is only the first
step in the grand struggle. ' Many
more are to he takeu by all parties
concerned before the end is reached.
Teachers, children and parents share
alike the great responsibility of edu
cating the youth of our land. Then 1
let ns all put our shoulders to tlui
wheels; let none shrink back, and time
will show the result. One more idea:
If your child needs books, see to it
that he has them. Nothing dampens
the ardor of pnpil or teacher more
than the total indifference manifested
sometimes by purents on this subject.
Never tell your child that you wont
get him another book because he has
lost the first one. Punish him if needs
be, but get him the book.
COUNTERFEITING.
Some Catching, hut no Hang
ing.
For the past week our town lias been
on the very tiptoe of expectation.
“Any new developments?” is the first
salutation when friends meet. The
cause of all this commotion is the ar
rest of Mr. J. Wells, charged with be
ing “mixed up” some way in the
counterfeiting of several thousand dol
lars of city money, last year. From
nnrno enuao n. “liADrini*" has been
postponed uniil to-morrow, at which
time it is hoped something tangible
will come to the surface. In keeping
with the rest of our citizens, we feel
more than anxious to have the matter
sifted. The pnblio hand reaches ont
vigorously in several directions, striv
ing to lay its finger on the head of the
guilty parties. In its swayings it
sometimes hovers over heads evident
ly beyond all suspicion. We dread
the result, buf want it to come—and
quickly, too. Let the guilty Buffer,
and lift the cloud from the rest, is
what we call on all good citizens to
set' 1 doiag.

Savannah and Macon are called by
some “Wadley’s largest way-sta

alleging that he is not working for
the interest of Savannah, but points
beyond.
The editor of the Hinosvillc Gazette
evidently likes peaches—at least we
judge so from his recent editorial cor
respondence from Tattnall county.
One reason ussigned for eating such
a quantity was that he “hated to see
them spoil.”
Babcock of the Jacksonville Press,
and Crane of the Key to the Gulf, each
claims for his city the greatest num
ber of babies. Well, all we have to
say is that if either place can beat
Brunswick they must be numerous,
indeed. Twins arc common things
over this way.
August 26.—Steamship Ohio, which
sailed to-day for Liverpool, included
in her cargo 2400 crates Deleware
peaches. The steerage of the ship has
been turned into a refrigerator lined
witnice and provided with fans for
keeping up a constant current of cold
air. This being the first venture of
the kind, its success is looked to with
much interest.— Ex.

the season, to wit: A chicken with
four legs and four wings—a regular

head, which is shaped like that ot a

Under the head “Times North” the
Telegraph and Messenger has this to
say:
“The current opinion North is that,
the bottom has not been reached theie,
and a Jong period of hard times and
heavy pressure is before them. They
insist that the South is as well off as
they are. She has felt the full effects
of the war, while their experience is
just beginning. And these are the
“results of the war,” wlrcli they to
not feel disposed to insist on so stren
uously.
We fear the above is too true, so far
as our AvLole country is concerned.
