A flatterer is a most dangorous ene my. When you write to the Emperor of Brazil, get a big envelope to hold the whole name, which is Pedro Giovanni Carlo Leopoldo Salvador Bidiuno Francios Xavier do J nul Leocardio Michel Gabiiel Raphael Gonzagne. A letter from Norwich, Conn., to the Hartford Times, contains the fol lowing story, as told by George W. Fuller, a submarine diver: While performing some work for “Uncle Sam," in one of the Southern ports, where it was customary for t hose who supjjlied the market with early garden truck to load their boats and row them around to the w harf, it hap pened that one day a burly negro load ed his boat with watermelons, and had just reached the dock where the usual number of loungers stood watching the operations of the diver. The negro, all unconscious of his situation, was zealously endeavoring to dispose of his cargo, when Fuller suddenly emerged, helmet first, from the water, thrusting his goggle-eyes and ugly head before the astonished occupant of the boat, and, seizing one of the largest of the melons, sank immedi ately. The negro, with a yell and a bound, reached the dock, and neither stopped nor turned until he reached home with the tidirgs that “Satan had •fiscated the ^melons, and was taking um down." Strong Drink. I have heard the wail of children crying for bread, and their mother ha 1 none to give them. I have seen the babe pulling the breast us dry as if the starved mother hud been dead. I have known a father turn u stepdnugh ter into the street at night, biddsng the sobbing girl who bloomed iuto wo manhood, seek her living there as oth ers did. I have bent over the foul pal let of a dying lad, to hear him whis per, and his father and mother, who were sitting half drunk by the fireside, had pulled the blinkets off hir body to sell for drink. I have seen the chil dren blanched like plants in a cellar— for weeks they never breathed a mouthful of fresh air for wont of mgs to cover their nakedness; and they lived in continual terror of a drunken father or mother comiug home to boat them.* I do not recollect ever seeing • mother in these wretched dwellings handling her infant, or of hearing the little ones crow or laugh. These are some of drink’s doings: but nobody can know the misery suffered amid these scenes of wretchedness, woe, want and sin. The Cubans of Key West, Fla., are feeling strong, and now propose to “run” the municipal machine. The KeycftheOvlf comes out with some good advice as well as gentle hints. J. M.
