Guess meals are chea . —We have heard of “spelling bees,” “shucking bees,”- and “quilting bees,” but never before of a “setting bee.” One of our truck gardeners proto el having one last Saturday, just after that fine shower, to get his cabbages “set out.” The attendance was slim —A slight ultercation took place in the neighborhood of Cook’s mill on Saturday last between two white men. Sequel—No. 1 flat of his hack, heels upwards, and No. 2 walking off triumphantly. — The Seaport Appeal is adver tised for sale. We shall be sorry, to char ge neighbors, for we might get a less i on.enial spirit—one with less consideration for the feelings of the Adveiitisib household. If Brother Smith really means to sell, we hope he will 1 ave au eye to our comfort in this matte . —The McDuffie' Journn' comes to us this week for the first. We welcome jt on our *: change list. Thomson, Ga., its home, must he a thriving place, indeed,.or ehe the editors of it are possessed of great persuasive powers, or both, for although a full sized pa per, a large supplement is necessaiy to ac 'ommodate the advertisements. —The little girl who told her papa that our little sheet (first issues) was only big enough to “ write two letters on” now thinks it will do for six or seven. Thank you, little sis, for your interest in our onterpi-ise. Be patient, and the day may come when it will be large enough for yon to write twice six letters on. Remember, the Ad vertiser must creep first, and then walk—just as yon did. Some day it may be able to run a strong race. Take care, now, it don’t outgrow you. —Bay street was the seen?) of some excitement Saturday evening. An old “tar,” somewhat befuddled with “benzine,” was disturbing the public peace. Officer Bums tried to arrest him, but he was rather too muscular. A runner soon brought Marshal Falun to tho spot, whose looks soon con vinced the worthy son of the deep that “discretion was the better part of valor.” He slept that night on his “little bed” in the city’s “Hotel,” with sixteen sons of Ham as his bed fellows. —Have you registered? Everybody harking, and some of the old ladies, returning to their yonthful sports, are trying their throats at “croup. ” —Be sure yon get the genuine arti cle of “Alligator Stocking.” Those that are colored with arsenic and oth er poisonous drugs are said to “pois on the foot.” — Little John Riley, formerly of this place, died on Doboy last Friday of pneumonia, r.nd wns buried in this city on Saturday, One jby one we pass away. —Rev. Abram Peek, colored, for merly of this city, died in Brunswick last week.—Darien Gazelle. The Gazette is slightly ii: error in name. Rev. Abram Burlce, colored, died here recently from effects of an injury received in being thrown from a buggy.- —“Talked to death” is to he the verdict of the jury that a young man thinks will soon sit on the body of a gentleman of thirty-six summers, whose lot it is to occupy a house with three ladies. Look out for that young gent, girls. You see what opinion he has of the fair sex. He may tell you, slioi tly after the “honeymoon” is over, that pour tongue wags too much. Sudden Death of Mrs. Love.—The numerous friends of Mrs Hemy Love will be pained to hear of her endden death, which occurred at her home in Bearson, Ga., B. & A. R. R., on last Thursday night. She spent a few days in our city last week, apparent ly in excellent health, w-*s quite well on Thursday last until bedtime, when she complained of a slight headache and c hilliness, and died in five hours. Truly our hold on life is feeble and uncertain. May Providence support the stricken ones, A Hard Case.—“Don’t say church to me, I have paid my last dcllar in that direction. Am not going to the Presbyterian Church any more. I shall attend the Episcopal now, and continue to do so until iutjr begin to call around to collect pew rent, then I shall play quits aud put in for the Methodist. But just ns soon as they begin to talk the same foolishness, why I’m ont and off to the Baptist I shall go until they get after me, then I shall quit all for good.
