Napoleon's Willow. Ex-president Johnson, during liis life, received a twig taken from the willow which bends over the grave of Napoleon Bonaparte, on St. Helena, which he S lanted in the garden of his late resi- ence, and which has now grown to a stately tree. A twig from this tree will be planted over the grave of Mr. John son, on Johnson’s Hill. A quarter of a century ago one fre quently heard a grand song which had been written with Napoleon and that St. Helena willow ns the. text. Like hun- hreus oi utucio, with a hundred times more merit, it has been nearly forgotten. We will quote some of the verses from memory: On the lone barren Isle, where the loud roaring billow Assails the stern rock and the fierce temp est raves, The hero lies still, and the dew-dropping willow, Like a fond weeping mourner, leans over his grave. Though tempests may rave, And the hoarse cannon rattle, He heeds not, he hears not, He’s free from all pain, * He sleeps his last sleep, He has fought his last battle, No sound can awake him To glory again. Oh, shade of the mighty—where now are thy legions, That rushed but to conquer when thou led’st them oil ? Alas! thev have perished in far distant re gions, And all save the fame of their triumph is gone. Though tempests may rave, etc. Yet, spirit immortal, the tomb cannot hind thee, Hut, like thine own eagle that soared to the sun, Thy soul springs from bondage, and thus leaves behind thee A name which, before thee, no mortal had won. Though tempests may rave, etc. and Morrhine batdt absolutely and speedily cured. Painless; no publicity. Send stump for particulars. Ur. Carl ton. 1ST Washington St.. C'hicago, III. Geo, p. Rowell & Coj Rather Too Much InstincSt.—The instinct of Newfoundland dogs to save a drowning person lias been somewhat painfully tested by an unlucky French man. ffe was walking in the country with a friend, who possessed a magnifi cent Newfoundland, and incautiously questioned the truth of the animal’s sagacity. The clog's master, vexed at the slur cast on his favorite, gave his friend a push and knocked him into a shallow river. “ Turk ” immediately sprang in, and seizing one of the tails of the immersed man’s coat, commenced to swim for land. Unfortunately another Newfoundland, trotting along the other side of the river, saw the affair, and also came to the rescue. Dog number two seized the other tail of the coat and wished to swim back to his master, “ Turk ” held fast and struggled for his side, and the owner of the coat cried in vain for help. At last the coat gave way, and each Newfoundland swam proudly home with a piece of cloth in his mouth, so that “ Turk’s ” master was obliged to plunge in himself to save the friend. nATARRHJ?:^ UTTD'!?
