WEDNESDAY, No*, 10th 1875. Public Scliool for IWliites. Consolidation. By order of Col. S C. DcBrahl, C. S. C. and 2j; don’] Snot., the above schools consolidated on the 2nd inst. There has Jong existed in \ the minds of a number of our best cit izens a belief that a move of this sort would be for the mutual benefit of alj cencerned. A movement was put r n foot two years ago to raise money enough to, enlarge the present acade* my building, looking to a consolida tion of the school work in our town. The project failed for want of suffi cient fund?, and the idea was aban doned indefinitely. Necessity, how ever, the mother of invention, and the prime cause. of at least .some good things, has brought about the desired ends. The insecurity from thieves of the building formerly occupied by the Malo Department, and ita utter free dom from anything like comfort in cold weather; has led to the change above alluded to. The great problem now is “Will the plan work?” , Occupying the position we do, as teacher, we feel that our opinion might be worth something in the matter, seeing, as we must, the entire workings of the whole plan. We admit that there are some disad vantages ; difficulties will arise among the children; some ill-mannerly boys may be disrespectful to some of the girls, etc,, but these are minor consid erations, such as can be remedied by proper management, and such a s should not be allowed weight in the consideration of the main object. Will the plan work? We say, yes, it will work, and nicely, too, that is if we may be allowed to judge from the ex perience of one week. We have never seen a greater change in auy set of children than is manifest in the case of of the boys'iri oUr (ye teacher’s) de partment, since the two sexes have been thrown together in the school room. All rudeness and misbehavior have been almost entirely abandoned, heads formerly dishevelled, now show marks of comb and brush, and faces once besmeared ancl greasy, but now bright aiid clean, greet the teachers every morning. But this is not all. r erfect lesson?, are now the order of the day, and a determination on the part of the beys to equal, at least, their classmates of tlie fair rex, or possibly to outstrip them. Nor is this spirit of noble emulation confined to the boys. The young, ladies, too, (girls, we call them) hot ix till abashed, have redoub led their energies, and are now bend ing every effort to mount successfully with their competitors the high pin nacle of science and literature. Then aw ny with your idt iu> of sepa rate schools A wise Providence never intended' 1 any such thing. The two H exes were created for each other. From extreme youth to out age they walk along life’s pathway together, then why seek to separate them just at that time in Hie when they need mat mutual good resulting from social in* tercourse with each other, staying the wild and boisterous spirit of the one and bringing into action the latent powers of the other? In conclusion we w ould say that the teachers of the schools would be p 1 eas ed at any time to seethe patrons an! trustees at the school room. Give them your support by your pres ence. J. M.
