The steamer Olyphant offism to carry the aame for a nominal amount. Ibeeost there fore, would be nothing, scarcely, and the advantage great to many, espec ially to the citizens of Femandina. We hope it will be cturiedont JltrrHomKT CnURes^ EsT. J. G. A. Cook is espec.cd to nil the pnlpit of the Methodist Church of this city on Sabbath next (26th inst) Presbyterian Church.—A letter from Rev. John Beveridge informs us that he.will (D. V.) fill the pulpit ol the Presbyterian Church of this city on the 26th iust, also 1st Sabbath in January, and regrets not being here last Sabbath as per invitation. Rev. N. Shortwell of the Synod of Tenn., has been invited to fill the pnlpit on the 2nd and 3rd Sabbaths of January. Bigger Still.—Two weeks ago we gave Lt. Risley oredit for the largest turnips of the season that we had seen —one measuring 21J inches around. Since then Mr. Israel Powell has sent us a sample of flat turnip as large around but containing less body. And now onr worthy County Treasurer Mr. John P. Lamb, steps to the front and sends us three specimens of the Ruta Baga turnip, measuring, respect ively, 21 i, 22, and 23 inches round and long in proportion—thus out stripping both the other gentlemen. Chicken Farm. —We met in onr oity last Saturday a Mr. Thomson from the “Buck Eye” State, who 1b in search of a suitable place for the establishment of a chicken farm. He represents him self a* thoroughly conversant with the business, and offers to famish gratu itously any information on the subject desired. We have long thought that this enterprise would be profitable in this section, and wondered why some energetio persons, near here, have not given it a fair trial. Guess, though, they think it beneath them, and only fit work for children and old women. A mistaken idea, we think. Tiaa science, as well as many others, and to succeed requires study and atten tion. Who else will embark? Spelling Bee.—The exercises of the npper department of the public school for whites were varied last Friday af. teruoon by a spelling match. Misses Maggie Moore and Mary Futch were selected tyr the teachers to “pick sides" from the entire school, male and fe male. The true test of a good speller being in the mastery of snob worJs a* are used in ordinary conversation and written communications, Holmes* Fifth Reader was selected as a proper book from which to select words for the contestants. The entire school en tered into the raoe with considerable seat, each side determined to hold the ■ floor. For *n entire hour Sis two cap tains sad their hosts waged the fight, their tanks diminishing at every round of words. Hue Louise Barku* loo and Master Paul Williams on one side, and Mimes Maggie Moore and Mary Pettigrew on the other held the floor longest. The first two, however, yielded at last, and left the fl/fld to Miss Maggie and Miss -Maiy. These were then pitted against each other, and spelled nntfl their teachers, fail ing to bring them down, allowed them to •teal notice of toys at Mr. Lcben’e.
