SOLVED!
The Great Financial Problem.
For the last year or two, our finan
cial horizon line been as black as E-
gyptinn night. Star after star, in sir'
PRMsinu, inis risen, unci for a time buoy*
ed up our rintiwj opirifs, but, iirtnrn?
each has become enveloped in mist
and fog and our new hopes blasted in
a moment; and to-day we shudder ns
we ask, Haven’t we reached the bot
tom yet? No, reader, we fear we have
not. Each revolution of the great
wheel of Nature only lowers the finan
cial car one degree deeper into the ab
yss below—jostling overboard its oc
cupants, one by one. The picture is
indeed nil ugly one, dear reader, lmt
is it not a real one? Is it overdrawn?
We think not. Almost every day we
read of new failures; thousands are out
of employment: money is getting
scarcer, apparently, and the mighty
Shyloeks of the country grasp tighter
the purse strings, and call loudly for
the “pound of flesh" as forfeiture for
non-payment. Then, too, comes up
the mighty wail from helpless widows
und orphaned children, tearing the
heart strings of any not yet past feel
ing. Nor is this all. Suicides are get
ting to be of almost daily occurrence.
B ut the solution—yes, the soliition of
this great financial problem. Who can
give it? Every man has his own the
ory. Brethren of the press have pub
lished long editorials; Legislators and
Congressmen have given vent to their
eloquence, and with wisdom beeming
from their very eyes, offer to lead the
nation safely through the financial
darkness around us; some yell “infla
tion;” some, “hard money;’’ whilst
others call loudly for a change of the
occupant of the “White House.”
Bender, it 1 is all idle talk. The
trouble is deeper still. There is but
one solution to the great problem, and
it 1 is thi/: Let every man return to the
first principles of individual honest;/.
The truth is, our entire people have
become corrupt. They have become
so avaricious on the one hand, and so
pinched on the other, that each ha 3
well nigh forgot the difference between
mine and thine. The great idea seems
to be, “Keen all you have got, and get
all you can,” it mattevs very little
how.
Shame! Shame! Shame! Shade of a
mighty Washington, do you not blush
to behold your children?
Since the above has been in print,
-we have received a late number of
that sterling journal, the New York
Observer, which clearly sets forth the
very idea embodied in this article.
The editor, after commenting to some
length on the difference between the
punishment for crime a hundred years
ago, when Rev. Wm. Dodd D. D., of
England, was hung for forger}’, and
that of to-day, adds:
“I do not wish to see the gallows
made a punishment for stealing But
with tlie incoming of the second cen
tury of the Republic, I would be re-
oieed to see a revival of common lion-
