Agricultural Cnniruiiuii. i
Pnreunnt to former notices.-our city
has been honored for the last few days
by the presence of quite a number of
Georgia’s noble sons, the representa
tives of the great agricultural inter
ests of our State. They come to us
from almost every county from the
mountains to the soa, to enjoy the hos
pitalities of our people, and hold their
semi-annual convention. Among tliei r
number we find many, conspicuous in
days gone by in the various intcrestsi
civil and political, of dear old Geor
gia. They have stood by her in days
prosperity and of adversity, and to
day, as heretofore, are looking to her
welfare in developing her greatest in
terest—agriculture.
Want of space forbids that we should
give a detailed account of their pro
ceedings, or notice personally many
conspicuous personages among their
number. Up to our going to press,
very little has been done, other than
to organize—the larger number not
arriving until yesterday noon. Tli 0
meeting convened on yestorday morn-
iug, as per adjournment^ and a
hearty welcome was extendod by our
worthy Mayor, to which Gon. Win. E t
Brown, of the State University, re -
spouded in happy style; after which
an able paper, the usual semi-annual
report, was read by the President,
Gen. A. H. Colqnit. The remainder
of the morning wa3 taken up in what
a good Methodist brother calls a “class
meeting”—interchanging ideas on va
rious subjects, but more especially
that of sheep raising. ,
We look with peculiar interest to
these conventions, as means of devel
oping the great agricultural interests
of our State. Georgia possesses every
element, we believe, necessary fora
great farming country, and as soon as
our people quit this foolish idea of
“hunting a better place,” and settle
down to scientific farming here at
home, she will take her position fore
most in the march of progress.
