—Mosqnitoes! Mosquitoes! Mosqui
toes! How they have tried their bills
on human flesh for a week past!
—A twenty mile tramp on Jekyl
Beach is pronounced “delightful’’ by
some who participated last Friday
night.
—The last Grand Jury recommend
ed, in their presentments, that the
County Court be abolished. Their
action has caused much discussion pro
and con.
—Mr. Leonidus Turner, having ren
ted a stall in the market, is prepared
to furnish mutton on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturday. Read his
notice.
—The colored excursion from Dari
en arrived last Fiiday afternoon, held
a ball at night at the Risley School
House, and returned to D. on Katur.
day morning.
—Messrs. Hertel and Peitzer took
the oath of allegiance to the U. S.
Government during the sitting of
Court last week. They are now citi
zens of this great country..
—Housekeepers, mourn no longer
over broken lamp chimneys. Messrs.
Hoyt & Co. have just received a lot of
the patent indestructible and non-break-
able kind that will stand fire and water.
They can be thrown on the floor with
impunity.
—The sidewalk fever has not aba
ted, we are glad to learn. We hear
of several propositions being made to
unite and bnild continuous lines. Do
not stand back on a few dollars, ye
property holders. Money Bpent in
this way is not lost.
—The fine steamship Corondelet,
Capt. Fairdoth, took heavy freights
from this point last week, also quite
a number of passengers. We hope our
people, os well as those in the interior,
will patronize this line as muchaspos.
sible, and thus help to establish it.
—Moonlight excursions to Jekyl
Beooh in search of turtles and eggs are
now the order of the night. We wouid
suggest to the next party going down
to take their canteens and luncheon
along with them and not leave them
in the boat. Such things do some
times disappear.
—The excursion from Montezuma
to Cumberland, lost week, passed
through our town a few days since, on
their return. They had such a good
time, and were so well taken care of
by Mr. Clubb, of the Oriental House,
that they talk of returning in force in
a few days.
—We repeat the notice given in last
issue, that the installation of Rev. R.
A. Mickle us pastor of the first Pres
byterian Church of this city will take
pluce next 8abbath at eleven o’clock.
Dr. Axon, of Savannah, will preach on
that occasion. Of the Doctor’s ability
os a speaker, nothing is necessary from
ns to insure him a good audience.
—A fete' ChinatUen' have pitched
their tent (a piece of cloth about 3x6
feet) iu the upper end of town. Guess
they want-to get back on the street
and drain' force. If these be * I * * 4 * * * fair
speeimenB of the “Celestials,’’ we
would recommend to .the . Californians
that they resuscitate the “Know-.noth*
ing” party. They are indeed misera
ble looking objects.
—Messrs. MeConn & Marlin, believ
ing in the old saying, “Shoe maker,
stick to your awl,” have concluded to
stick to their old business, wholesale
and retail grocers, and, to that end,
have come to the front this week with,
an appropriate “ad.” They mean
what they say. Call on tfiem and se
cure “bargains” in Dry Goods, Boots
and Shoes, Hats, Caps, etc.
Death of Mrs. Schlatter.
On Friday morning last, our citizens
were startled with the sad announce
ment that Mrs. ^Fannie C. Schlat
ter, wife of Col. Charles Schlatter, of
this city, had died suddenly during
the night. It appears she retired as
well as usual on Thursday night, but
awoke at an early hour the next morn
ing, feeling ill, and summoned her
youngest daughter (the only other
member of the family at home); but
before either physician or friends
coaid be gotten, she gently passed
away.
We extend to the bereaved family
our warmest sympathy, in this the
hour of their nffiction.
