W. A. JOHNSON,
Arers’ old Stand.
—We take it all back. Don’t turn
out the pigs—the cows are fine melon
rind scavengers.
—Drs. R. Noble & Son have put up
a new and attractive sign, also Dr. Ma
con of the drug store.
—What’s the row between Commis
sioners and pilots. We hope the mat
ter will be arranged pleasantly.
—Mr. Frank Higginbotham killed
a rattlesnake in his field near town,
last week, six feet long. A dangerous
enemy that.
—The Republicans of Glynn county
meet at Sterling Camp Ground, Aug.
5tii, to send delegates to the Congres
sional Convention.
—With watermelons at “two for
fi’ cents” and a good run of job work
fora week past, we have been as “hap
py as a clam at high water.”
—An excursion of colored folks from
Albany will be down to morrow
(Thursday) at five o’clock. They have,
chartered a boat to take them on to
Florida.
—We have an inspector in town
who handled from the lumber yard,
and delivered to the vessel at the
dock 300,000 ft of lumber in six d ;ys-
Who can beat it.
—Capt. Tilton is back in town, girls, j
Give vonr sweethearts a good talking j
to at once, or they may be after try- j
ing to scare him again with their little j
pistols. j
—Well, the Court House lias been !
commenced, and, strange to say, it is
neither of brick, iron nor stone, but
of wood. How sorry some people
must be!
—All candidates shculd subscribe
for the Advebtisek. We dont think
any citizen fit for office who is so far j
behind the timog as not to kuow that
our sheet is now and ever has been the
“People’s Friend.” Repent of your
sin and hand in your dollar, ye nspi
rants.
—Bob Tooms, having been whipped
in a political campaign once, left soon
after for Europe, to “improve his
mind.” One of our old bachelo r
friends left a short time since for the
Centennial for the same reason, he
said. Poor fellow! Guess he got whip
ped, too. Cruel woman to treat him
so.
i —We have 9 man in our midst who
! works like a Turk ten hours a day,
1 and then spoils it all by growling the
balance of his time becauce he has to
work.
—Business on the Bay seems brisk
this week, owing to the number of
vessels in port. The lumber trains on
both roads seem busy, but somehow,
very little money is floating around.
How is this? Rise and explain, ye
knowing ones.
—The Glynn county Agricultural
Society met yesterday. The few and
faithful ones were present as usual.
Their delegates leave for the semi-an
nual Agricultural Convention at
Gainesville, on Saturday next. Last
spring the above convention met here
to discuss how to mnko the crop; they
now meet, to compare notes and tell
how well they have succeeded.
—A Spanish barque from Havana
arrived in port on Sunday last. We
learn indirectly that there is sickness
aboard. If such be the case, our city
officials cannot bo too particular.
Coming as she does from an infected
port, she should at least be detained a
season on quarantine grounds. A lit
tle indiscretion in matters of this sort
might result in serions detriment to
i our community. Better be too strict
than too lenient.
“Veni! vi7li! Vici!”
II. Hoe & Co’s, patent oliisel-tooth
saw, now running at the saw mill of
Messrs. Cook Bros. & Co., in this
place for the last three months, fully
merits the above old Roman “saw-,”
and has fully conquered. Mr. Cook
says he would like to have it on the
mandril all the time, as it works bet
tor than any saw he ever had before,
and the genial John ought to know,
we opine. It cuts easy nnd smooth,
makes good lumber, nnd costs but lit
tle to keep in order. Mr. W. A. Ful
ler, the efficient Superiutendent of
Messrs. Dodge, Meigs & Co. at St. Si,
mons Mills, has one of the same or
dered for their mills, nnd we expect
to see them come into general use in
this section, as their merits become
known. Mr. J. M. Dexter is agent
for their sale here—sec his card in an
other column.
The Outlook.
—We learn indirectly that Mr.
Clark of the Brunswick House is try
ing to increase his boarding capacity
by renting another building for next
winter. He expects quite a number
of Northerners down with him this fall
and winter. When will that long.
talkod-of hotel be built? We need it
now.
—Bob Christopher, the blacksmith,
is a trne friend to the Advebtiseb.
He pays his subscription in advance,
settles his advertising bills on presen
tation, and, not satisfied with this,
sent ns last week a nice lot of peaches
and figs. Bob is a good smith and a
worthy citizen. His order for hard
ware brings goods as well without
cash as with it. Few are so fortunate
these days.
From all points of the country we
get reports of “good corn crop.” In
some sections, it is trne. The showers
have been withheld nnd the yield les*
sened thereby, and in others we hear
of caterpillars and grasshoppers.
These, however, only destroy cotton
and the blades of tho com—not the
ear.
Tho abovo fact, coupled with the
political prospects (for all hands are
crying “reform”), leads us to believe
that the outlook is not a very ugly
one. Fill the corn cribs full and re
form the Government, and prosperity
will smile upon us from every hand.
No section can prosper so long os
her children buy bread stuff from
“Egypt” or elsewhere. That com
modity should be made at home. If
| Georgia will raise her own corn, the
| natural consequence would be she
! would raise her own bacon, chickens*
eggs, butter, etc. In short, almost
everything wanted in that line.
Horses and cattle, too, would receive
more attention; their breed would be
improved, and, in fact, many steps ta
ken looking the grand consummation
of all our hopes—a “land flowing with
milk and honey”—a paradise below.
All this, and more too, if our people
will but fill their barns yearly with
the “staff of life.”
—The “Commissioners of Loads nnd
Revenue” met yesterday. Present—
Mr. J. M. Ti.son and Mr. ,T B. Haber,
sham; absent—Mr. J. M. Cooper,
We were present by previous invita.
tion, and must say that we were pleas,
ed with the manner in which business
•was disposed of, and also the great
caution manifested by the Board in
the payment of bills. Like our city,
the treasury is well fenced, and no
man gets out a dollar unless he has
clean papers. Our county if- still un
der a cloud, but, if the present finan
ciering is continued, we may hope for
better days.
—Two young hearts w-iil beat us one,
they say, before the events of to-day
are over. Others would like to follow
suit.
Wanted.—Any person owning a
small place near this city, and on some
salt stream, might find a purchaser for
the same, if desired, by enquiring at
jhis office. ,
