ptly filled and delivered by leaving them at

M)@M. BiTins,
—Well, didn't they "scoot?” Some
couldn’t wait for morning.
—Dr. Hablehurst has. resigned the
position of City Physician. Dr. Blain
will,fill thd'positon hereafter.
—Lemons are considered an excel
lent preventive for fever. Our mer*
chants should keep a supply on band
all the time.
—By an ordinance of the city, no
goods, clothing, freights, etc., will be
allowed brought to this city from Sa
vannah after this date, until further
orders.
—Reports from yellow fever in Sav
annah about the same—some days it’s
better and some days little worse. Re
ports that yellow fever is in Macon
have been contradicted.
—Some folks find fault with onr city
authorities on the Quarantine subject
—think they are over zealous. We
think they are not strict enough. Key
down a little tighter, Fathers.
—This is the reason he would not
subscribe for a paper: "That gal of
mine would be too lazy; she wouldn’t
want to do anything but set around
and read.”. What a pity "tlmt gal”
had not been born of a different sire.
—Many persons attribute the recent
sickness in town to the prevalence of
north-east ;rly winds; bringing mias
ma from the Altamalia swamps, ns the
sickness decreased as soon as these
winds ceased.
—Mustard seed and whiskey we pub
lished as a preventive against yellow
fever—but, reader, the seed must go
down your throat as well as the whis
key. Putting the seed in the palm of
your hand and the glass on top cf
them don’t have the desired effect,
any more than tying roots to the han
dle of a jug and drinking its contents,
calling it "bitters.”
—Bay street, in the neighborhood
of Littlefield & Tison’s wharf, presen
ted a sight refreshing to behold on
Thursday last, while the N. Y. steam,
er Cavondelet was in. Everything in
that locality was in motion. We wish
we could witness such sights every
day along onr wharves; prospects
would then brighten, croakers disap
pear, and the Advertiseu start up the
hill.
Another Preventive.—Pulverized
oharcoal, taken daily, is used by the
inhabitants of the tropical islands as a
preventive against yellow fever—the
idea being that, os the charcoal is an
excellent absorbant, it takes np and
carries off with it all the impurities or
poisons that reaoh the stomach, keep
ing that organ thoroughly oleansed.
There seems to be logic in it.
St. Simons.—We took a trip to St.
Simons last Satnrday on the little tug
Hamilton, owned by Dodge. Meigs &
Co., for the use of their mill, for tow
ing, etc. Found things brisk and live
ly and running on in good shape, So
far, a little over 81,000 feet of lumber
is the greatest amount cnt any one
day, the average being about 76,000.
We found the Dart mills not at
work, being ont of logs. Their capac
ity is about 30,000 feet per day.
Sickness, Deaths, etc.
In onr last issue we published that
"Brunswick never was healthier,"
Such was indeed the ease np to the
time of our going t<r press, but imme
diately after our publication, a very
malignant type of fever showed itself
in the neighborhood ot Bay street.
The presence of yellow fever in onr
sister city led many of our people to
believe that we, too, were passing
through the same fiery ordeal. Oth
ers, however, scout the idea, and
among that number some who have
passed through 'different epidemics.
-They assert most positively that these
cases are not yellow fever, but a high
type of bilious fever. A We feel con
strained to say that, so far, we are
forced to conclude that there has not
been a single case of yellow fever in
our city, and furthermore that the
word never would have been pronoun
ced, liad not onr sister city been nf*
flicted with this terrible plague. The
minds of many are inflamed on tlii 8
subject, and they are ready to pro
nounce almost anything “a clear case
of yellow fever.’V/We regret to sty
that many of omApeople have been
seized with a sort of panic, and left
in hot haste. A number of deaths
have indeed occurred within the last
eight days (see list below) from differ*
eut causes, only four of which bore
any resemblance to yellow fever, and
two of them refused to take any med
icine until too late. It is truly unfor*
tunate that these other deaths have oe*
enrred just at this juncture, as the ex
cited mind is ready to class all under
the same general bead, and in feverpd
haste spread the news far and wide
that “yellow fever is raging here.”
There ure several new cases of this fe
ver, but all of a milder type, that
yield readily to treatment.
We regret that the action of our
City Council, in their precautionary
measures, has been misconstrued by
some into the idea that they (the
Council) believed that yellow fever ex*
fated here, finch is not the case, so far
as we have been able to learn. Had
they done any less they would have
been derelict to their duty as guardi
ans of the city.
