A cheerful view of Washington is
given in a story ouco told by Mrs.
MadiBon to a little g;rl, who now
ropeats it in Lippinoott. "One day
in Philadelphia," snid Mrs. Dolly
Madison, “I was sitting in my par
lor with a very dear friend, Mrs. It.
B. Loo, whouiu walked l’ay no Todd*
(her son) dressed in calico bed-gown.
While we were laughing at the
figure ho cut, the servant • throw
ntltorfloof and announced Oen-
Wusbington. What
fo do with that dreadful boy I didn’t
know. He could not faoo the Presi
dent in that garb. Neither could
ho lcavo the room without meeting
thorn, for tho door they wore enter
ing was the only one. I mode him
prawl quickly under a low, broad
eettoe on which I .was sitting,
bad just time to arrango the drapery
frhen the Washingtons entered.
After tho courtly greoting, and the
neaal cpmjiliincqta of the season,
fhcro camo from nnder the settee a
heavy sigh, which evidently attract
ed the General’s nottoe. However,
J only talked and laughed a little
loader hoping to divert Ips atten
tion when—oh, mo 1—there came an
ontcry and ti-kick that could not bo
ignored. So I stooped down aud
dragged Payne but, by the leg. Gen
eral Washington'* dignity loft him
foronoo. Laugh! Why, bo fairly
roared. 1 He nearly went into con-
vulalone. The tight of that boy in
that gown, all so unexpected, homing
wrong opd first from nnder my Beat

A Dandy leading a dog by a
atfing lounged up to a ticket office
window of a railway station, and
inquired: ‘‘Must I—aw—take
ticket for a puppy?" Hewosnat-
pmUy both surprised and anhoyed
a slightly bewildered tone, after a
moments reflection: "No,-yqh can
