BRUNSWICKADVERTISER^
T. G. STACY, Editor and proper.
FRIDAY, MAY U, 1880.
SECOND DAY,
MOKNINO.
Rain ! Rain ! Rain I But despite its
incessant pouring, the gate keeper s
receipts far exceeded those of the day
previous, us well as the second day of
the Fair of 1879. The crowd yester
day was Jarge indeed, and, notwith
standing tho raiu, seemed to enjoy
themselves. Dunn, the indefatigable,
wa3 oh hand, and kept tho young ones
in a perfect fever of fun, with his mi
nor amusements. Few men can excel
him in this peculiar branch.
GOVERNOR COLQUITT.
At forty-five minutes after eleven
o’clock Governor Colquitt was intro
duced to the assembled'multitude, by
president Habersham, with appropri
ate remarks. He arose amid the ap.
plauae of the assemblage, and in that
easy, off-hand way, so like himself,
began tho difficult task of entertain
ing that vast assemblage, under the
most adverse circumstances. He re
ferred, good humoredly, to his visit
to our fair two years ago, when he
praised our womeu so highly, and gave
so little comfort to our men, whose
departments were, we must say, some
what behind - This time he spoke to
the men, praised them for the evi
dences of thrift shown by their exhib
its, and urged them to go on in tho
good work, and wound up by predict
ing for tho sea coast of Georgia a
bright, bright future.
We hnvo been shown by committees
of different departments exhibits innu
merable, with u request that wo notice
editorially, but where to begin and
where to end is the problem that puz
zles ns. We don’t know what to leave
out, and to mention all would take too
much space. Tho truth is, we saw
nothing common—all were good. To
a few, however, wo must allude. The
bouquot and wreath iu the fancy work
department, made of sixty-seven vari
eties of seeds, by Mrs. J. S. Marlin,
a lady of sixty, is certainly a curiosity.
As we said, it is made of sCeds alone,
so selected, colored and arranged as to
represent au exquisite bouquet and
wreath. The works of art by our
home talent, Misses Lockett and
Htiles, show a degree of proficiency
not often reached by mere amateurs.
The window decorations by Sirs. Mi
chelson, Mrs. T. W. Dexter, Mrs. M
C. Rowe and Miss Blaiu reflect great
credit upon the fair hands that ar
ranged them. In the domestic ije
partmeut, we saw much that delighted
the eye, and, probably, also, the taste,
but, not beiug so fortunate as to be on
the testing committee, can't stuteposi
tively. Floral Hall is a model of beau
ty. The various displays show the
taste of our fair womeu. The Judges
will tell you whose was the best display.
Of Agricultural Hall we need not speak.
We have already said enough—we
challenge the world to beat it. Whilst
our stock depai tiuenl is rather limited,
we congratulate our farmers on the
marked improvement over former ex
hibits.
AFTERNOON.
The weather having cleared off beau
tifully, at the hour appointed the va
rious Knights iu handsome costumes
appeared on the grounds, with lances
in hand, and soon begau the contest.
Below we give their names, characters
and scores made.
KNIOHTS.
R. M. Tison —Count de Guy, 14.
Wm. Turner—Black Prince, 11.
W. (). Moore—Count Miret, 14.
H. Giguilliatt—Knight of the Semi-
Doles, C.
H. H. Davis—Knight of the Red
Cross, &
Wm. Wiggina—Knight of Malta, 13.
G. B. Mabry—Knight of the Lost
Can6e, 10.
H. 0. Taylor—Ivanhoe, taken sick.
G. W. Wright, Jr.,—Count-dq Bus-
sey, 13.
E. D Pritchard—Sinbad, 4.
There being a tie for first and third
prizes, the contest was continued for
several runs until the tie was broken
and the prizes awarded as follows:
W. O. Moore—first prize,
R. M. Tison—second prize,
G. W. Wright—third prize,
Wm. Wiggins—fourth prize.
When two young people, with a
singleness of purpose anil a double-
ness of affection, sit up with each
other, and when the clock strikes
twelve he says, “is it possible?’’
and she says, “why, I didn’t know
it was so late I” you may draw your
conclusions, that, if the business
boom continues, a unified couple
will be hunting a house to rent be
fore the first of May.
A herd of 23,800 cattle are being
driven from Oregon to Montana;
120 men do the driving, and the
outfit includes provision wagons,
arms an amunition, 800 horses and
forty dogs. The journey is made
slowly, a day’s travel not exceeding
nine miles, and the speed w ill be
lessened when hot weather comes
on, in order not to get the beasts
into bad condition.
