Albany Band it will settle the ques
tion. Our blind is ready at any time,
and have offered every inducement to
them, but they decline to accept, while
continuing to assrrt their claims of be

The writer of the above evidently is
ignorant of the facts in the case, oi
else wilfully aims a blow at our Baud.
Our boys did everything in their pow

Albany Band at their Fall Fair of last
year, but it was nc go. At our Spring

Referring to our article of two weeks j Yesterday was a big day with the
ago in which we spoke of increased j pupils of the while public school of
business of the M. A H. K. R., mid . this city. Through the efforts of
tde the inquiry why the naval store friends, over thirty prizes had been
business which has heretofore come
here, is being diverted to Savannah,
•e have heard rumors that the Gulf
»ad which by virtue of a bill of in
junction in the U. S. Court put itself
beyoud the authority of tho Railroad
Commissioners and their rates, and
hen it was demurred out of court,
filed a new bill just like it by which
they still remain beyond the authority
of the Commissioners, are charging
six cents per barrel on naval stores
from Jesup and teu cents from Wuy-
cross to Savannah. Everybody wheth
er experts iu railroad tariffs or not,
knows that these rates are not paying
rates for tho road.
We also hear a rumor that they have
issued excursion tickets from Jesup to
Savaunah and return, good for one day
nly, but recognized if not used
offered for the various classes, and the
children were all qni vire to know who
should he the fortunate ones. Quite
a number of mammas and a few (>apas
were present to wituess the closing ex
ercises, which consisted of recitations,
declamations, addresses, awarding of
prizes, etc., all of which weie credita
ble alike to teachers and scholars. —
Just here we would ask in candor, why
is it that so few parents were present
yesterday ? We find parents willing
to find fault, but few ready to help.—
If you take so little interest ill your
children, how are you to expeot them
to take iuterest iu themselves ? In
our next, we will give the list of prizes
and to whom awarded. All honor to
the present Hoard of Education ! They
have maintained the sehools against
odds, paid a debt of 31,500, aud are
day as their issiio, for one dollar for still in tact,
the round trip, or less than one cent
le. It needs no expert in pas
getiger tariffs to know that this does
not pay either.
It is clear if these rumors are true,
that this is a bid by which to divert
