1 thought it would make me large
if I would chew tobacco, but 1 don’t
think »o now. No, sir!
I go to the same school that Jim
Brown and Harper Black go to.
Or.e day they thought they would
show me how to chew.
They gave tue u small piece to
learn ou.
And when I was getting into the
way of it pretty well, I began feel
uncomfortable. I told Jim and Har
per, but they only laughed a little
and sa d I’d be all right in a
short time. Ami 1 went on chew
ing.
But I didn’t get all right.
No; 1 got worse and worse.
1 told Jim and Harper about it,
and they laughed again aad said
that was nothing—everybody felt sick
at first.
And they said that as soon as 1
got over my tick iab ness 1 would IVel
like a sen und would walk around
as Mg ns anybody.
And I continued to chew away on
the little piece of tobacco.
All at once I got awlal Hick
I pitched the tobacco out of my
mouth in « hurry.
1 didn’t want to be a man.
1 didn’t oore If I never got to be u
man.
I thought I’d rntherjbe n hoy and
never see tobacco.
I felt sure I was going to die, and
I told them to run for father and
and mother and Lula and cousn Joe.
But they just stood up there and
luughed.
I guess I went to sleep about that
time, und 1 dreamed an awful dream.
I thought Jim and liai |»er turned in
to great hideous giants and they stood
over me und crammed great plugs of
tobacco down my throat. And when
I got full of tobacco they turned me
inside out and left me lying in the
road.
When I got well und looked
around I found myself in bed at borne.
I told my mother I would never
try to take a short cut uguin to be a
