Canton, Ua., February 18th, 1882
DEATH.
Diad Sunday night last, at her
home in Canton, Mrs. Mary Barton,
wile of Kev. W. J. Barton, and
daughter oi Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin
Speer of Campbell county.
Her lemains were carried to the
home of her parents in Campbell.
Mrs. Barton had the watchful care
of her good mother and the solie-
tous attention and sympathy ot her
weeping husband, in her lust hours
on earth.
Mrs. Barton was baptized into
the Canton Baptist church in 1880,
by Rev. J. A. McMurry. She was
truly a pious woman who showed
by hsr upright walk that she “knew
in whom she believed.” She left
many friendaonourninghcr loss.
Ilow sad 1 thus so soon taken
away from her happy married life.
None but the young husband can
fully knew how sad. Our deepest
sympathy is with him in this heart
breaking trial.
“God can temper the winds to
the shorn lamb.”
. Died on last Sunday, in the
Southern part of this county, Dr.
David 11. Payne, about 70 years
of ago. Dr. Payne was a popular
and successful physician. One ol
the oldest, and most substantial
citizens of the county, and a pious
member of the Methodist church.
He was the father ot lion. B. F.
Payne, our fellow citizens and State
Senator. Dr. Payne wdl bo great
ly missed by the citizens of Chero
kee, and many ftiends mourn for
him, but not as those who are with
out hope.
Died a week ago, last Sunday,
Mrs Bebeeca Fowler, near Wood
Stock, in this county. Mrs. Fow
ler was one of the fiist settlers of
this county, was a worthy good
woman, and served her generation
to profit, and mauy are left to call
her blessed. She had long beon a
devoted member of the Baptist
church. Her last hours were made
bright by the “light of God.”
Local Incident.
1 *f
In a pleasant town in Cherokee
county, two beautiful and accom-
pUshed young ladies were on a
visit to the family of the —hotel-
Two of the citizens, most worthy
young men, often visited the young
ladies. A warm attachment was
the result. Two young gentlemen
in the mean time, from a neighbor
ing town, old friends, made the la
dies a visit, stopping at the same
hotel. The landlord, having an
eye to business, suggested to the
two load young men to be ener
getic, and the two visitors would
be uneasy and remain for some
time, and it would be a “wind fall”
to the landlord in the way of a
bill.
Th# local young men, the very
next day called out the landlord
and proposed to settle the other
two gentlemen’s bill if they would
go back to their own town. We
leave it to our readers to guess who
the parties are and supply all the
romance to this tale ot
never miming smooth.”
