The People's Candidate for Gov
ernor lu ilie Field.
Editok of Advance, Canton, Ga.:
Perhaps you will be surprised u
receiving a communication Iron,
one with whom you areunacquaiu-
ted, but being a sunscriber, and
constant reader of your valuubh
paper, (it being my home paper,
for I was borq and raised in old
Cherokee, andpva* near Canton
that I spent my boyhood days. 1
thought perhaps a few items in re
gard to this part of Texas might
be ol interest to your readers ami
some of my old friends in old
Cherokee. Panola county, in which
iTivo is one of the bordering Eas
tern counties of Texas. I came
hite from Cherokee, Ga., five years
ago, have been'over a good portion
of East Texas, nnd am well pleased
with the country and am satisfied
that a man with limited means, can
dq a great deul better here than in
Georgia. This is undoubtedly the
country lor an iudustrious hard
working man. Any man that will
work and iuauage well can make a
good living and lay by something
for a rainy day. Good lauds can
be bought from $1,50 to $2,00 per
acre, in the woods, And improved
bottom lands from $5. td $10. per
aero. This is a fine timber coun
try, good water and healthy—not
withstanding tho prevailing opin
ion abroad, is that Kaat Texas is
sickly. I must say that it is a mis
take. This country will compare
favorably with most countries, in
regard to health, in fact, I know
families here that came from the
mountains of North Georgia, who
enjoy as good health here as they
did there. In regard to the socie
ty, it will compare favorably with
that t>f any country. W e have as
moral, Intelligent and good Chris
tian people here as you find any
where. We have good churches,
schools are taught every year in
almost every neighborhood through
ont East Texas. The public school
fund is an important factor in the
education of the youth of this
oountiy.
All we need to make this a great
country is a railroad from here to
Sabine Pass, There is one sur
veyed now and is thought will be
built from Ilendorsou to Sabine
Lake South of this, through some
as fine timbered country as you
will see any where. A great deal
of fide’pine timber which is admir
able l*6r building purposes, and
which some day .will bo very valu
able. Most every thiug in the
way of fruit grows here.* This is a
, fine vegetable country, and sugar
cane grows fine and can- be made
very profitable. Ono of my neigh
bors, .0. Boynton, is engaged in
the cane growing interest, has a
large mill for ,tlie manufacture ol
syrup and sugar, lie has been
raising ribbon and sorghum lor
years. They grow finely, yielding
on good land and good season an
average of 200 gallons per acre.'
There will be planted on lus
farm about sixty acres in cane, or
ange, amber and ribbon, r l here
is mere money, I think, in the cul
tivation of cane in tins country
than there is in cotton. The drought
cut our crops short here last year,
but enough corn made to nearly
do the county to make another
crop. Corn is selling for $1. per
bushel now; syrup 75cte. per gal
Ion; cotton is selling at from 7 to
11 1-2 cts. bacon 12ctn; flour 8 to
10 dollars per barrel. Our nearest
railroad town which is our coUoii
market, Henderson, is seventeen
Farmers are paying from
10 to 16 2-3 dollars per month for
farm hands.
I will dq$e lor fear you will
consign this to the W. B.
Very Respectfully,
M. F. Haley,
WMl ' '
Gen. Gartreli being asked bj s
Post Appeal msu il lie was a candi-
late foi Governor, said:
"I have not hesita’id when ap-
•reached on the subject at*t<
Uiat, in obedience to the eur ties'
• Imitation of ifieuda, I would allow
lie use of my name as a caudidute
lor Governor at the emotion in Oc
tober next, and that, at the propel
time, 1 would, in an address to my
leilow citizens, lortnally and fully
set forth the principles and rules ol
conduct by which I shall be govern
ed in theeVentef my election.’
"It was not my purpose this*ally
toutitiounce iny candidacy, but as
t h e cm. v ss seems already to have
tieeu opened, 1 yield to the
general desire of my friends iu tnak
mg this announcement, and in do
ing so i hope it will not oe inferred
that 1 wish to create any division or
political < Xcitetnciit among oUt peo
ple. Nor is it mv intention or de-
siie to disorganize or disrupt (even
were it my power to do so) either
the National Democratic or Repub
lican parties. I realize and shall in
sist upon the great right ot the peo
ple to cleat, by a free ballot and (an
count, their own servants and agents
to administer their government for
them and for their brnefit without
caucus dictation or the application
of the party lash.”
"I am an Independent Democra
tic dandidate for governor, and it
elected it will be my earnest desire,
by strict and unremitting Attention
to the duties of this high and re
sponsible office, to see to it that the
laws are so administered as to 1 ad
vance the prosperity, protect the
rights, and promote the welfare of
all the people of our beloved H-ate.
The people-are entitled to efficient,
intpurtijflHknd good government. It
is not only the right but the duty ot
freemen of all classes to demand it.
To secure this end, I believe—and 1
cannot better express it than in th<_
language of a distinguished Geor
gian—'That everv child should have
the opportunity of acquiring h com
mon English education in schools
forever made free by a liberal support
from the State Government.
‘♦‘That monopolies, by wnich a
privileged class exercise ucontrolling
power over the property and lulioi
of a multitude of citizens, are op
posed to the genius and spirit of on
governinen 1 ;-ami we wilt atea dr-tv
resist every imasure or system tha
tends to concentrate political powei
or undue business opportunities in
the bunds of llie few at the expeuse
ol the many.
‘“That the present system ol lens
ing the State couvicts must be wiped
from our statutes as A foul blu
upon our civilization and linmuni-
•j-
«-That party proscription and
sectional prejudices have greatly re
tarded the mateiial development and
growth of our State—which material
prosperity we earnestly desire and
will diligently foster; ’ktfd" (6 this
end we will use every moral and
legal means to suppress proscription'
and to liberalize sectional prejudices
,—recognizing the unity of onr com
mon Federal government, and equal
ity of all men before the laws.’
“ ‘I endorse the platform of prin
ciples recently formulated by Dr.
Felton. 1
“i*I do not believe that any coali-.
tion bus been formed, or even con
templated. In the progressive and
liberal movement now sweeping this
State 1 rejoice that the psople have
become alive to tneir true interests,
and that men of all parties who
think and act for themselves have
{evolved to unite for the patriotic
purpose of securing good govern
ment.’

Mb. Editob:—, To poiut out
wliut goudia railrdtal' does, I will
merely say (hat this to have pur
chased nearly all the corn iu the
section, beside a vast quantity of
beet, vegetables, Ac., thereby giv
ing the producer a market clo-m to
jiaud, and, paying market prices,
yet after all of this, there are peo
ple who are opposed to auy rail
road, not really, but on account ol
some ljtt|q petty, animosity they
may have against some one con-
nepted with the road. They are
like the Pharasee who went up to
the mountain to p^ay. .i
The grade is coming along rap
idly, and in a few week* will be at
Cool Spring. Contracts for ties
and water ta.,ks have been let, and
tho sound ot the woodman's ax ia
beard everywhere, denoting that
work is being dune. It is. no small
engineering feat to bring a rail
road across these mountains, as
tbo topography of the country is
very rough.
Mr. Levi Daniell will move into
his store this week, with a large ]
stock of goods, aud no doubt do a
good trade, as tliern is a large set
tlement around here.

* Life i« a prison—
Debt fastens the chain, *
Forges the cuffs on,
And there to remain.
But a debt that is paid off,
S ion as it is due,
Iheaks ell the chains off,
Aud sturts life anew.
Now hear our song sung —
That's sung in Jtlm spirit,
For we want that little,
And expect you to pay it.
We ask you to trade more,
We’ve plenty to sell,
At less price than before —
Cash goods have all full,
We’ve dry goods at cost,
That we bought at a lire,
If you say they’r not low—
We say that you are a——curi
ous fellow. 1
We can beat “all hollow"
In groceries, so low
Coffee 8 pounds to the dollar, -
Sugar—great heaps, for almost
aatking.
Ev'ry thing for the cash,
Is as low as you ask, '
So don’t be so sqsli, 1: . i
And go off and spend your mon
ey borne where else.
Ia ei
Coma and see us—come!
Let’s talk of low prices—
Call before you go home,
Aud another soul will be happy
wheu you get there.
