that those who would settle in "
town or community, are driven away.
The r.sult is, the town is finished,

ery city in theUnion that has sprung
up as by magic, like Chicago, Allan

the “first settlers, - ’ not claiming
special favor, but inviting arid en

Where is the town that ever pos-
sssed a preg ssive spirit, wheie new

“first settler ?"
“First settlers,'’ have many good
men among them, that are not nar
row minded, but public spirited and
unselfish. These are the pione. r >
who felled the first tree and built
the first cabin—Then they invite
others, encourage others to come in
and gain in building up. They
know that the immigrant usually
gives motive power t« progress.
“First settlers” are usually too easi
ly satisfied. They are too good, und
are willing to let well enough alone.
