The Capital of Madagascar,
A resident of Madagascar for seven
yoars recently surprised his London
nudicneo in the courso of a lecture for
the benefit of a hospital at Tananarivo,
the capital of the island, by describing
the civilization of the Malagasy. Ho
found Tananarivo to bo a really splendid
city, with magnificent public buildings.
Tho house ho lodged at Vvas as good as
any in lxmdon, and there was a Homan
Catholic Church which would not dis-
graco l’aris. Tho Crime Minister, who
was curiously enough husband of tho
Queon and almost tho most intelligent,
astute and clover man he had over met,
occuniod a splendid official rosidonce.
The Premier knew precisely how far ho
could advance in the path of civiliza
tion, and wltoro to stop. No outside
people could so well control tho Mala
gasy as tho present I’rimo Minister.
During the Queen’s reign of ton -years
lie had publicly abolished idol worship
and embraced Christianity. The nobles
of the land as well as the mass of fho
population wore now Christians. The
Premier was an educational reformer
and had established numerous schools.
11c had abolished “trial by poison,” a
superstitious rite which used to deci
mate tho country. It was intended to
make tho Queen do facto ns well ns do
jure tho jnonnroh of the island, and it
was a great pity that any disturbance
should oomo to tho existing slate of
things. Among other beneficentchangos
which tho Crimo Minister had wrought
was tho abolition of tho introduction of
slaves from Africa. He did this with
one stroke of tho pen, and in doing it ho
did away with what might bo called tho
“material wealth” of Madagascar. A
man had before boon considered richer
or poorer in proportion to tho number
of slaves he owned. A natural anxiety
J irovailcd that a country which had so
nr advanced in civilization should not
go buck.
Stable Floors.
With proper care, whore thoro la a
plenty of rough straw, oats, sawdust
or tnnbnrk lor Dedding, a plank I oor is
tho best that can bo devised for a horse.
Karth lloors have been highly commend
ed, but they constantly got, out of order
—uneven, and oven damp and disagree-
able—so much ho that no caro or dcvico
can keep thorn in proper condition. A
bare plank I'oor, however, is not only
di agreeable to tho horse, but danger
ous. When a horse lies down, it re
quires eonsidornblo effort for Him to riso
again, and if tho plank floor is wot, it
iH almost impossible for him to obta'n
n sale foothold to aid hint in rising. In
l is way horses are frequently strained,
and probably injured for lifo. It is im
portant, therefore, that horses have am
nio bod ling, not only for their comfort
nut their safety. If a person has a cut
ting-box, it pays to run tho bedding
through the bov. In cleaning tho sta
ble the bedding can be oas'erseparated,
tho wet from tho dry, and the latter
caved for use again. And good farmers
are now hauling tlioir manure immedi
ately to their fields, and long straw in
the manure is frequently in the way
xv. on plowing in tho spring. If tho
bed ling is run through tho box it obvi
ates this difficulty, and it is cosier ban
died by flic shovel.
There should bo no doubt itbou' using
plank foots, bn', thoro should bo care in
preparing thorn for the comfort and
safely of tho horse. If you do not, and
your horse is lame in a flip, woak in tho
smnll of tho back, do not call it your
mis'hrlune, but your carelessness. What
terrible lying thoto is in attributing
many of the failures and mishaps on the
farm to luck and misfortune! luwa

Oar Population.
A stranger loaned over thp bar of a
Michigan avenue saloon tho other day
and whisperinglv inquired:
"Partner, what is tho population of
tho United Matos!”
“Hard on to 50,000,000, I buliovo,”
was t ho reply.
• It s over 10.000,000 any how?”
"Oh, yes.”
"You’ll bet on that?”
“I’d like nothing better than to put
ii]) $ 10 on it.”
"Well, \ off 11 have a chance. There’s
a chap down in tlnr shoo store who
claims that wo haven't got >,000
population, and lie is bluffing every
body. I'll bring him up if yotrll make
a bet and take him down a peg.”
" Bring him along.”
The stranger wont away and returned
w tli the bln lor, who had no sooner en
tered the saloon than lie called out:
“Where’s tho man who says this
country lias over 40,000,000 popula
tion?”
Tho saloonist modestly ropl od that
he was the man, ami in le-stliun a ni'n-
ute the two ten-dollnr bills were put in
to tho hands of tho first caller.
“There's a now map in the store
across the way which has the last cen
sus figures on it,” said the saloonist,
and all went over to see tho matter set
tled.
'1 he figures showed that thebccr-soll-
er had won by a large majority, but
nothing on that map, nor above, below
nor beli ml it could tell what had be
come of the man who held the stakes.
Indeed, it was only after tho one who
bad lost had also slipped away that any
body realized that they were conlcder-
tilcs. Then tho victim started out with
a club to hunt the world over and re
duce tho population by one, but his
search was in vain. — Detroit free Press.
—Wet weather is frequently followed
by attacks of pneumonia among sheep.
These animals can'not well resist wet
and cold together. This disease is
rarely cured. The best treatment is to
give small tab’espoonful doses of tur
pentine in milk once a day—in tho
morning before eating. A dram of salt
peter given in a bran mash may be ben
eficial. But caro to keep the sheep dry
and to provide a dry, airy shed for them
is far more effective to prevent the
trouble than any medicine can bo to pro
mote a cure.—N. T. 'limes.

In former yoars farmers had com
paratively little protection agn ; nst tho
depredations of horse-thiorcs. These
marauders could despoil the tiller of tho
soil of his stock, and m ike good their
escape before the law could be so
manipulated as to inclose them within
its meshes. In the Far West the farm
ers dispen-cd with red tape, and
forming themselves into \ igilanco com
mittees, meted out justice with tho aid
of a convenient tree and a rope when
they caughttlio offenders. This custom
is still in vogue in ecrtiin parts of tho
West. 'This cla«s of thieves became so
numerous in the southeastern portion of
1’cnn-ylvnnia that a’out 1H27 or lH-'8
a number of farmers in the littlo
Township of Oxford, Philadelphia
County, nnd its vicinity, formed an
organization under the t.tin of the "Ox

founders of the company wore .John
l’ox, l’oter Arrison, John l’avington,
Jacob Snyder, Jacob Hhallcross, Uen'eVn!
Castor, Charles Bobbins, Jacob I ivozoy
and William Roberts. 'The rulesdiffered
but littlo from those of tho horse com
panies of the present day. All tho
members of tho company constituted a
riding < ommittoo, and were arranged in
classes, each clans having a loader.
There loaders were known as the Noti

so classed that two might rldo in com

Ills expenses were paid from the funds
of the company. When a horse was

formed the Notifying Committee. Fncli

his class. Tluj member was also noti
fied to ride a route designated for him,
nnd was ordered to immediately pre

neglec to do so, except incase of actual
sickness, lie was lino I five dollars. If

What Becomes of Knives!
A solemn problem is presented by tbo
inquiry, What becomes of pins? The
disappearance of cans which have con
tain d fruit, baked beans and other
alluring articles of diet is another un
solved enigma. No one, is wise enough
to trace the whereabouts of tho mass of
horseshoes which arc always coming
off, and which, of course, can not all bo
found. But with tho lost chords of
music and tho lost arts mustbe reckoned
tho immenso body of disappearing
contrivances for cutting nnd slashing
familiarly known as knives. Reference
is hm e made not to the table knife, putty,
pallet knife or chopping knife, but to
the pocket knife, that humble instru
ment of pleasure and pain, and to the
kni b of tho boy, and not of the graver
nn 1 older class of whom tho boys are
fathers. What becomes of boys’ pocket
knives? Arithmetically the question is
n large one. A country village vviln its

The Teeth.
While it is true that tlio excessive uso
of candies—especially so in modern
times—is injurious to the teeth, at least
through tho stomach, it is evident that
the great cause of the rapid decay of
the teeth among even the young is
from tho poverty of tiio food used in
bone and muscle materials. It is not
.strange that young ladies of twenty
summers, and even younger, may bo
found with artificial "teeth, when it is
known that they have been nearly
starred by living, or attempting to live,
on pastry, an article so destitute of the
material from which tho bones and tho
teeth arc formed. This fact, with the
general t'aceidness of tlio whole sys
tem, the want of stamina—foundation-
less—will account manly for the pre
mature crumbling and decay of what
were intended as a life treasure. Wo
may also add that tho custom of soak
ing food, tho uso of very soft food, ren
dering tooth scarcely necessary, is
another prominent- cause of decay.—
