Notier,in the last issue of your ex
cellent weekly paper, yon do my has
bond Dr. II B Hill, and myself, tlie
honor of n very complimentary no
tice, for myself, ond for lum, who is
now incapacitated .for writing, by
reason of Vertigo and paralysis. I
take occasion to thank you for the
flattering compliment.
Your good impressions of the land
of “oranges ond flawers," which yon
are ple.scd to attribute in part, to
the “graphic description’ of my hus
band, is so just, that I can cheerfully
add my testimony, that it is a “good
ly land" figuratively “flowing with
inilk and houey”—Not in streams of
equal breadth and depth, or momen
tum to all, but in fljod-tide only, to
the industrious and energetic.
The orange belt of Smith Florida,
is now attracting emigrants in great,
numbers from all the older states,
consisting, generally of the most en
terprising,intelligent, and energetic;
enthused and confident in the nssur
ed success of tropical fruit and win
ter vegetable culture.
The subject, to those meditating a
change of residence is worthy of in
vestigation. Either a visit to the
country, or subscription to one o!
the following local papers.

LARGE IMiTIOVEMENTS.
Col. W. E. Nickerson has built a
8aW'inill at Canton, with all the mod
era improvements, at which a large
amount of most excellent lumber is
made every day. The mill is situa
ted on the bank ol the Etowah river,
For miles above, them is a large
quantity of good poplar. These trees
he floats down the river, that are
caught by a “boom" at the mill.
Here lie has a single track tramway,
by which lie draws the logs by steam
powej, to the carriage. This mill
has capacity of about 0000 feet per
day. A side track from the M & N
G road, runs to the mill shed, where
the car can be loaded with the lum
bar for shipping.
Col Nickerson proposes, in-a few
weeksto put up a new mill with a
capacity to cut 20,000 feet of lum
ber per day.
He will build in addition to the
present shed, one about 400. feet
long. Then ho will be fully able to
furnish all this country with the
best of lumber. The Colonel has
under his sheds, for sale, at a reduc
ed price, two large Deane steam
pumps, that will pump 800 gallon,
of water each, per minute, also one
Blake fire pump, that will pump MOO
