PUBLIC HANGING.
Since we can remember, and
that has been a loni? while, we
hare never heard of so many hang
ings. And strange, hut lamenta
bly true, thousands crowd to the
places of execution as spectators.
Still more strange and humiliating,
wo learn that many making this
vast number are woman.
How curiosity can so overcome
every tender impulse of a true
heart.
How any one except some har
dened wretch in whom cruelty has
shriveled all the good in the hu
man breast, caq gleat over such a
spectacle, is beyond our compre
hension. Goil pity the mother,
daughter, sister, wife, rushing to
such n horriblo scene! Wo can
but think that these executions in
private, will auswer the onds ef
justice ns well, and be as great a
terror to evil doers,as if made pub
lic and looked forward to as a big
•how.
We ere convinced that private
executions would not he half so
demoralizing, as they would not
furnish food for that morbid, vul
gar, curiosity and devilsh cruelty,
which needs but to be led to grow,
and predominate iu the end. Still
we presume our luw-mak<’ts and
custom formers know more about
it thau wo, or they would change
with other advancements in too
wot kings of society.
COMMUNICATED.
Boad Harris told a “friend’’ last
Sunday, the following fish story.
All who know Boad will not doubt
the truth of the narrative.
Boat! and his friend started fish
ing in the spring of 1877. When
about 1 1 2 miles from the cieeK,
they stopped to dig bait, near a hol
low stump. They heard a slushing
in the stump, lo>krd aud saw u cat
fish that )md been left, when the
waters fell daring a lresbet. They
caught it on a hair hook, and found
it weighed 140 pounds.
Taking this fish for bait, on the
hair hook, set it in the creek and
eoon a tiout weighing 311 pounds
swallowed the “cat" and before they
ceuld get it eut of the water, anoth
er cat fish ef 463 pounds weight
Bwallowed the tront. Fearing tho
hair hook would break, Boad jumped
in the creek, and threw the cat on
shore.
In this fisn was found a sack of
marbled that the boys had lost, a
baby carriage with the picture el
George Washington on the dash
board, a spinning wheel, a pet crow,
and a geld headed walking stick,
marked “T, M. M.” Boad intends
sending the cine to J. Ilirris of the
Constitution, to place with his petri
fied bird,
Boad is the responsible party in
this fish tale.
T11E RIGHT SORT.
We walked into W. T. McCollum’s
shop, Tuesday and was fo cibly im
pressed with the great advantage ol
perfect baud work.
He had just finished up a light
two horse wagon, and it was being
painted by Mack Hardin. Two wag
ons or drays, nearly finished for Col
W. E. Nickerson. These wheels
will have a 4 inch tire aud will bear
up 8 tons as a load.
Mr. Marshall the foreman black
smith knows all that can be learned
about iron and puts on the irons as
the wood work is campleted.
Mr. McCollum informs us that he
is going to eularge his shop, adding
another story as a paint room. No
machine work can compare with this
hand work of Messrs McCollum.
