William Galt, a native of Canton,
loft us last week, to accept a con
ductor’s place on a Bleeping car
running from Charlotte to Mont
gomery.
Mr. Galt graduated last year
from the StateUnivers>ty at Athens
Ilis habits, unexceptionable moral
character and business capacity,
places him on a plat-form far
abovo that atmosphere of tempta
tion, that so often poisons young
railiead officials. While his many
friends regret to part with him—
wo are nil prond to send out in the
busy world such a specimen of
moral manhood.
COUNTY S. 8. ASSOCIATION.
The County Sunday-school As
sociation meets with Little River
•chool, “Trickum camp-ground,”
en Wednesday, August the first.
The President has made arrange-
nenta with the M. & N. G. Railroad
te rue a special train en that day,
at halt rates, ler tho benefit of
delegates and visitors. Convey
ances will be in readiness, for all
parties, from Woodstock to “Trick-
urn.” On arrival, they will be
cared for by the good people of
“Tnckum.” -A largo crowd is ex
pected. An interesting programme
baa bean mapped out aud several
tohoelBhave signified their inten
tion to bo present.
Immediately after the adj.mrn-
ment of the Association the Littlw
River camp-meeting begins,
The following are some of the
subjects for discussion, and it is
expected every one to say some
thing.
SUBJECTS.
1st. What is the best mode of
conducting Sunday-schools to ac
complish the greatest good?
2nd. How shall we get tho pa
rents and adults to take more in*
terest in Sunday-schools?
3rd. Is it ever wise to place an
unregenerated, or worldly-minded
person in charge of a Sunday-
school claes?
4th. What are the prospects of
the Sunday-school work in Chero
kee?
5th. What is a Sunday-school?
Those aud similar subjects will
be discussed.
Distinguished Sunday-school
workers have been invited and
looked for. The meeting promisos
te be one of much interest.
Let all the schools in the county
be represented, both by male and
female delegates, The invitation
is exteuded te schools that have
not joined the Association as wul^
as those that have. Every Sunday
Bchool in the county is wanted ir
the Association. Come— make
this an interesting meeting by

Patterson and family left for Yell
county, Ark.
Mr. Patterson was a quiet, clev
er citizen of Canton lor many
yeats, and we wish ho and family
may bo as well satisfied in their
new home in tho west ns they were
in Georgia- Mr. Pattersnn is an
accomplished mechanic and has
left many monuments of Ins archi
tectural skill and taste in Chero
kee.

McAFEE HOUSE.
Mr. E. B. Holland has bought
wl DuPrce’s Hotel interest aud is
now the sole proprietor of tho Mc
Afee House. Mr Holland has sup
plied the housothis week with new
furniture, pretty and substantial.
The house is now complete in
every department. Nothing is
wanted to make all the guest-i com
fortable. All who come to this
house will ho politely received,
attentively waited upon aud boun
tifully supplied.
A good many visitors from the
dusty and crowded cities are hero
and arrivals tdr ast ovary day
There is i;b ’ otter summer resort
than Canton. The town is quiet
and pleasant, t u board excellent
and very cheap.
THE STOLEN HOUSE.
On Thursday night, he 28th of
Jenc, U’lt., Col. J. J. A. Sharp of
Walesca. Cherokee county, had a
liorsi stolen. The thief way tracked
some distance the next morning.
The trail at length was lost. Cu[.
Sharp sent telegrams, postals, Ac. to
all partsyt the country,giving n <1 is
ctiptiou of the horse, bridle and sad
dle. •
Col Sharp uni Ex-Sheriff W. A.
Kitchens and ethers rodo through
the country for miles in search of
the theif. Not a stone was unturned
to accomplish 'the capture. »ln the
mean time one of Col. Sharp’s pos
tals fell jnto the hui.ds of Capt.
Wyly of Macon police, lie went to
Work uud s on spotted his man. Col
Sharp was noul'ud, pushed off to
Macon stopping in Atlanta and get
ting Col. Letn Aired to go with him.
They identified the Imrse and
returned with their nittn and lodged
liini in Canton jail. Las - . Wednes
day was appointed for trial. Tin
town was crowded with people, to
hear what the citizens of Cherokee
seldom hear, a man tried I'ors’ealing
a horse, for w<» have but little steal*-
ing in this county.
The prisoner waved trial, and
failing to give bond ot $1500. w
sent to jail in Marietta far Bale keep
mg till August court.
The prisoner has many names,
Burdett, Davis, Lumpkin, Ac. He
is a man about thirty years of age,
with sandy hair and beard and rath
er an intelligent lace, lie would
not be selected for a horse thief by a
physiognomer. He eec-mi to have
rather a defiant expression.
Col. Sharp deserves tho thanks ol
the county and of all good people
lor his untiring z ul in hunting
down the man till he was captured
and jailed. The Colonel engineered
the matter in Macon with much skill
and out genera'ed Surn Jemmison

ANOTHER SNAKE.
C. II. Jeffs killed a rattle snake at
his house juit below Canton, lust
Monday. He was a large specimen,
having 12 luttl s. Mr. Jtfts is tin
owner ol u line oulldog, which found
the snake, anu in trying to kill it,
the snake bit h:m on the head. Mr.
Jefts applied teipentine to the wound
and made the dog drink a large
quantity of fresa sweet milk and he
will soon be well.

about twenty of the surviving mem
bers met in Canton on Tuesday the
3rd Ins', to make arrangements for
a reunion o! the 23d Regiment.
On motion I/t II. S. Tolbert was
called to the chair and J. L. Worley
to act us secretary.

off, red and unanimously adopted.
