REUNION OF TWENTY-THIRD
GA. REGIMENT.
The surviving members of this
brave regiment,met on the 3lstof
Aug. A goodly number were en
abled to grasp each other by the
hand, while sad, sweet gratitude
swelled their manly bosoms. I he
tow* was full of men, women and
children. The Canton Cornet Lund
furnished splendid fnusic for the
occasion. After arriving at the
appointed grounds--- Prayer by
Judge McClure and an address ei
welcome was delivered by J. J. A.
Sharp, Colonel ot the Regiment.
Col. Sharp happily depicted some
of the real scenes, and recalled
many recollections i f the past,
when the souls of the Southern
meu were being tiied---“y©rK-
town, Seven Pines, Around Rich
mond,” and other bloody battles,
where the noble “23 J” was an im
portant factor, were painted by
the Colonel in his impressive style,
Capt. Mitchell of Acworth, was
introduced, and Capt.. Garrison of
Woodstock, both having cernman-
ded companies in the “23d” made
feeling speeches to their old com
rades.
Capt. Newman of Canton, who
commanded iu battling for the lost
cause, from Tenn. made a shott
and impressive speech, The day
A LETTER.
Canton, Ga., Aug. 23,1883.
In answer to James McClain’s
circular, which t >ok him six months
to prepare; Then had to employ
Att’y J. D. A.tta’vay ♦<* do the work,
aud as he does nut deny the charge
L made; or touch upon the matter
contained in my letter, I have but
little to say
He speaks of a fi oo country qnd
discussing merils, &c.
No country was ever so free,
that one man had the right to lie
and slander and cry down another.
As to watching, McClain has per
mission from me te watch mo, and
after this,to say just wliut lie please
about mo.
As to the Ordinary’s office, such
an idea as running for the office
never entered my mind, and Mc
Clain knows ho originated this
from tho stump. What the circu
lar stat-s about what E. N. Abbott
says, 1 am able to prove false, in
the whole, if I thought it deserved
the trouble.
All McClain has to say about
bonds, Ac., every m m in the county
knows is falsa, and dor’t deserve a
notice. btauley’s certificate is
false; he » simply trying to help
McClain out of a scrape, that is all
it ie worth.
McClain is Idee a little flee always
barking, and Stanley a regular
“bench leg,” trying to growl him
out. What I stated about McClain
in my Februniy letter, I hero re
peat with a clear conscience,know
ing t bat all I said wus strictly true
in every particular.
As to James Stanley, he was
brought as a lunatic to me, and I
took euro of 1dm, and received full
expressions from his father, mother 1
and a brother, by a letter from one
ol Ids brothers, approving of my
course, and thanking me for my
attention.
McClain is hounding me to ruke
up faults in my character, when il
he should open one page of his own
character ho will have enough to do.
What I did wud right, till McClain
got.mad with me, then it was all
wrong.
Ha keep on tattling .Mister McClain,
Tell all you know, then talk again.
Tell who it was that told you so,
And tell everything whe’er you go.
Now if you know much aboai
yourself, suppose you teil that too.
Get all your neighbors in a row,
All your kin, And I ell them how
To ruise among themselves n’niuES,
then sign your name to every fuse.
Try this Mr. McClain, and see it
Ben IS t an ley willendoise us usual.
Respectfully,
Wm, A. Kitchen.
