night, the baliav brvath of the evening
that was being waftivl in sighing kisses
from the evHgiaks of Florida mmlo
vocal by the chirp of the cricket and the
low, mellow note of the dissipated tom
cat as lie wandered listlessly around the
back-yard, now and then dodging in n
nonchalant, languid fashion tho latest
boot-jaek ns it came hustling through
the air with emel foreo, or stopping be
neath a window to see if his howl was
still within reach. Up from tlio west
ward CAtno the sound of the sea ns its
silvered fonm plashed in rhythmic ca
dence on the white sands of the bench,
and through the masses of folingo that
encircled Driertou Villa could bo seen,
ever and alien, especially anon, the fit
ful flicker of the ice-cream lairs tlmt
flecked the horizon in every direction.
It was a night fora pool’s pen, n painter’s
brush, or a largo schooner of weiss-beer,
and as Qiroflo sat there in tlio gloaming
her thoughts wandered lmek to tlio days
of a year agone, when every moment of
her life was brimming over with joy and
every day seemed a rose-tinted dream
from which one would never care to
waken.
And now nil was changed. Standing
on the verge of womanhood and watch
ing with wistful eyes f ir tlio mists of
futurity to rise, her life should have been
a happy one ns Hope enlled to her with
jocund voice and youth laughed back re
sponse. But instead of this tlio dark-
somo shadows of doubt and fear fell ever
on the pure young faeo, nnd in tlio sweet
brown eyes there was a wistful, yearn
ing, Heaven-kno ws-I-wisli-m y-shooH-
wero-two-sizes-largor look that was pill
fill in its sad beauty.
‘‘You cannot lovo mo, George,” slio
says at last, “or you would not leavo
mo in this manner—go away for two
wliolo days, when you know that my
heart will bo breaking for you, and that
every moment of your absence will lio to
mo an ago of torturo and doubt"—and
coming to liis side she plncod her arms
about liis neck in a shy, liesitatiug,
don't-know-whcther-I-nm-afoot-or-horso-
baek fashion that tells its own sweet
story of a lovo that will novor fado or
falter as long as tlio collateral securities
hold out
And so they stand there, the moments
passing by unheeded, tho girl nestling
in his arms secure in tho deep trustful
ness of an overpowering passion, wliilo
the man, smoothing hor fair forehead
gontly, bonds over now and then to kiss
tho rosy lips that aro upturned to liis,
nnd then wonders in a dtoomy, idyllic,
north-side fashion who the last man that
held a similar situation on Girofle’s staff
might have been. Buddenly the girl
breaks tho silence—she had broken tlio
man on the last matinee day. “And
you must really go?” she says; “really
and truly ?”
“Yob,” lio answers, “when duty calls
wo must obey, and I linvo seldom known
duty to call on the poorest hand.”
“But I cannot let you go,” slio says
passionately. “It is cruel to test my
lovo so soroly,” and breaking down in a
storm of sobs, slio clings to liim more
closely than ever. And then, just ns lie
fears for her reason, so terrible does tlie #
blow seem, the sobs tnat are making tlitj
little form quiver with anguish cease,
and Girofle looks up with a happy smile
upon hor face. “I will be brave,” bIio
says, “but you must make mo one prom
ise, a holy, sacred promise that oven
death itself may not absolve you from,’
“I will do it gladly, my precious one,”
lio murmurs. “What is this promise?”
“You must promise,” she says, “to
(end me your razor.”
“Why, of course I will, sweetheart,”
he replies gayly. “I promise you that
cheerfully. But why do you make such
a strange request ?”
“Because,” she says in those low,
mellow tones that would luro a man

A (iood Clerk.
As to what constitutes a good salesman
in tho grocery business, a well-known
grocoryman is quoted by a correspond
ent ns saying: “Firstly, he should be a
better judge of quality than are liis cus
tomers, and he should use this knowledge
honestly. He should always recommend
goods that he knows to be of full value,
and yet not over-praise them. Above all,
if he is in the wholesale trade, lie should
not urge upon his customers more than
a convenient stock. Drummers on the
road are apt to make that mistake, and
thereby tempt the retailer to buy more
than he will tie able to pay for. A clerk
in a retail store has nn advantage if lie
possesses some knowledge of cookery, so
that he can tell how articles may best be
prepared for the table. Hints of tins
kind are valuable even to experienced
housekeepers, especially as to new goods.
Such a man acquires influence. But lie
xnusn’t be impertinent or obtrusive with
liis advice. Polite attention is tho one
thing needful in a salesman, and young
men shouldn’t forget it if they mean to
succeed behind the counter,”
A special from Redflcld, Dakota, snys:
‘Several parties nf work on a farm four
atul a half miles south of Redfield have
discovered an old fort, which occupied
nearly two acres, and from which nearly
200 human skulls have been exlmmed.
On an clevntion of ground nearly 150
feet higher than the surrounding country,
and at a distance of one-half a mile west
of the Chicago and Northwestern Rail
road, is a fort nenrly round, and no
doubt years nnd years ago it was the'
means of defense for some liiho which
was eventually overpowered and massa
cred. Phis earth-work was thrown up
with a ditch on either side, and at one time
three feet wide and of tlio same depth.
At a point on the south there is an open
ing, nnd tho intronehraents were dug
aboiV 20 feet to a gulch that led to n
small lake a quarter of a mile distant.
Tho human skulls were found at the
western side of the fort, and the mystery
cannot bo solved by any one. In a space
1 feet deep by 18 inches square there
were over a dozen skulls found, ns if t hey
wero thrown in together. No other
bom s wero found, and tho only solution
s that the party were massacred and left
"’here they fell until tlio wolves lind
•'icked tho bones, whontlioy were picked
ip and buried in ono grave.
“There aro three theories advanced.
First, it is stated that a party
J nenrly TOO people started from South-
tii Wisconsin, nnd before they reached
he Missouri River were met by tno oav-
q es nnd many were massacred nnd the
•urvivors turned back into Minnesota,
second, from the skulls ono won'd judge
that tho people wore taken prisoners ami
slaughtered. The reason for this con,
return ia that em nearly all the same siilt
•f the head is smashed in. Third, the
trench where the*y wero funnel is emly 1<
feet lung and 3 feet wide, nnd it is not
known how many have been exlmmeel
si uno saying that over 250 haveboen taken
mt, and almost all of them have double
es'tli all around on tlio lower jaw, ami
w neither Indians nor Europeans ns a
iil»* have teeth of that elesoription, then
Tolmbly elate back to tho mouud-lmilel-
is. Koine eif tlio skulls have no forc-
ii uds, nnd look liko those of tlio “mis
big link,” being shaped diflluvntly from
my over seen at this ago, while others
ere finely shaped. The correspondent
i id an interview with Drifting Goose, n
ib-chief of tho Sioux tribe of Indians,
ut nothing was leariuel. Not a stone,
uitchi't, button, e r anything that could
-sist in identifying the race they be>
longed to has yet been found.”
Being Klnel to n Stranger.
Among the passengers in a parlor cut
on tlio Lake Khoro rood recently was a
handsome woman, whoso husband shared
tho sent with her and who would have
been picked out as n quiet, sedate, ab-
sent minded man. The seat opposite
was occupied by a flashily-dressed young
man, with a lady-killing twist to his
moustache, nnd ho was considerably sur
prised when tho husband handed him a
daily paper with the remark:
“Have a glance at tlio news; plenty of
•xcifemont around the country, I ob-
serve.”
Tho young man was busy with (ho pa
per for half nn hour, and thou the litis-
hand offered him a popular mogozino.
I’li im entertained him for an hour, and he
had scarcely closed (lie book when the
good man reached over with:
“Have a cigar. These aro prime
Havanas, and I Juiow you will enjoy
ono.”
The young man accepted with thanas,
uni naturally mndo his way to the
smoking car, where lie put in nearly
•mother hour, but without tbo other’s
company. When lie returned ho was
greeted with:
“Perhaps you’d like to look at the
''dost novel ? Very entertaining, I assure
you.”
lie read until weary, and upon being
offered another cigar replied that ho was
to leave tlio train at the next station,
and added:
“I want to thank you for your cour
tesies.”
“Oh, don’t mention it.”
“You never saw mo before?”
“Never.”
“Don’t know my name?”
“No.”
“Thou tell mo why you wero so cour
teous’to an entire stranger.”
“Young man, I will explain. In times
past when a loafer sat and stared at my
wife as a steady job I got up at the end
of nn hour and broke his neck. This
made mo much trouble and expense
and I changed tho programme. I now
o u-ry books and cigars to bribe them.
Had you been going a hundred miles
farther I should have offered you a drink
of brandy, a new puzzle, two more
dailies and another cigar, and my wife
would have secured quite a rest.”
“Sir ! I—”
“Oh, it's all right—all right! It was
cheaper than throwing you out of tho
window, and I hope you’ll get up to the
hotel safely. Good day, sir—good day,
glad to have met you !”
And that young man with tho lady
killing moustacho and crockery-colored
eyes and hair parted on an even keel
picked up his grip nnd walked out with
out being certain whether lio had been
mashed in a collision or pulverized un
der a land-roller. —Detroit Free Frees.
“How much older should a husband
be than his wife ?” Edith: Three to live
years is usually sufficient; but if ho is
very rioh, fifty or sixty years is allowable.

IVhill Fire Is Destroying.
“Firo is a good servant but n bad mas
ter,” says tho proverb. There are few
who have not seen it as master, and
known what it is to helplessly look on
and witness tho vanishing into air of a
house or barn and contents that have
cost say a round thousand dollars. Think
of a hundred such fires, of two hundred
of them, or enough to destroy a wliolo
village of considerable size. Now imag
ine four hundred and fifty (450) such
villages, or enough to place ono every
mile between New York on the Atlantic
and Buffalo on Lake Erie, and all on lire
ui'd destroyed. Yet this would bo no
greater less than what has, on tho aver
age, been occurring every year in tlio
United States and Canada for eight years
past, at least—or $720,000,000. Take
good care of tho matches, tho careless
uso or storage of which has been the
most fruitful cause of fires.
