A CHILD KILLED.
On last Sunday morning, while
nil the citizens who own convey
ances, and those whose financial
department was in a sufficiently
heuithly condition to hire a bores
and carriage, buggy or wagon,
were hurrying off to the camp-
meetiug—while the breakfast bells
were ringing, uud good sleepers
were rubbing their eyes, prepuri
tory for this important, beginning
of the day—The usually quiet
town of Canton, was thrown into
furious excitement and shocked
with terrible horror, by the an
nouncement that, a negro man
had muideredhis littlo•‘step-child”
about four years old, nud that the
devil In-carnet had fled.
Col. II. (J. Kellogg, N. 1\, being
in command for the occasion, di
rected Henry Daniel, L (J , to pur
sue the fugitive. Our people IN*
masse, were soon on the “war
path.” W ith a lot of untrained
dogs, scouring file wood*, climbing
the hills, creeping along the river
bunks anti humping the muddy
creek bottoms in list pnrsnit, but
never found thsir mui. The pur-
susis returned in squads, irom 10
to 12 o'clock, fatigued and disap
pointed.
A large crowd soon gathered at
the house of Caroline Blake, col’d.,
where the murdered child lay
dead.
TIIE DEAD CHILD’S MOTHER
stated that she and the murderer
told tho woman and tho man that
the child had becoi choked to death.
The woman is said to caro but little
about tiie death of the child, but
labors to shield and excuse the
man.
THE INQUEST.
A jury was organized by Col-
Kellogg, N. ]*., in the absence of
the Coronor, acting in his place.
After gathering all the evidence on
the case—the jury retired and soon
intun ed, reporting that the clitld
came to its death by tho hands of
Jerry Marshal, the step father.

Mr. Editor:— Iu rpply to a ciicu-
lar letter distributed by Mr James
McLain during the Aug. term ol
Cherokee Suprior Court. Mr* W. A.
Kitchen asserts thut the letter so
distribute was my production In
justice to Mr McLain ar.d my sell I
teg leave to inform your readers
that it was not composed by me, and
that in the assertion Mr Kitchens
jumped t# a conclusion in whica be
is eneirely mistaken. The truth in
the matter is this— Jfr McLain
brought me the letter uliove refered
to and asked me to correct the errors
in it, stating at the same time, that he
wus no scholar, 1 did so amt ttiis is
my entire connexion with the matter.
The letter was composed by McLain,
and the aid given by me was to cor
rect some bad grammsraud spelling.
I would have done this for Mr Kitcb
ecs.The reason McLain gave me for
for the publication of the letter was
tl at Mr Kitchens bad placed him in
an uuenviable position be fore the
public, and that lie wished to set
himself aright. The reason given for
thedelay in the matter was that he
Ciuld mote efftc'.ivly accomplish his
parpose at that particular time.I
With the merits of the contiove gy,l
1 have nothing to do, that isaqu-s i

who feel an interest wiil have to
deal. Respectfully,

litre tie woman found work in

till last Saturday, when he was
employed by t’upt J. M. McAfee.
This woman has two children.
The older, a girl, culled Mattie

boy, about four years old. The
father of these children is named
James Chenep.und is still living.
The poor little murdorEtl boy

fever for some time. For the
child’s fretfulness, says the mother
Jerry Marshall had oftnn been
cruel to him, beating him unmer

On Snnday morning the mother

her, saying the child was very

She went heme and found it so
and sent tho girl for Dr. Tnrk, who
came promptly, but found the
child dying. Maishal lingered
about the house till the child was
dead, the* ran off, and was pursued
as before stated.
We learn that a short time after
the mother wer.t to Mrs. Harris’,
that Marthal was seen carrying the
child, leading it by the hand into
tho woods, r.car the house, and re

woman, carrying the child iu his

Flam murks and prints ol the
fingers were on the child’s throat,
giving unmistakable evidence that
the child was choked, and that its
death was caused from strangula
