Cochineal and Carmine.
The Ironmonger, London, eiplains
why the beautiful cochineal and carmine
colors nro so expensive. It says : One
of the best and most powerful aDimal
dyes used in the nrts and manufactures
is the body of the female cochineal in
sect, dried. This insect exists on a
species of cactus, and when alivo is
about the size of n ladybird, or perhaps
a trifle smaller. It is wingless, rather
long, equally broad all over, and is
marked behind with deep incisions and
wrinkles. It has six feet, which curi
ously enough are only of use directly
after birth, and secures itself to tho
plant by means of a trunk, which is
found between tho fore feet, and derives
its nourishment from the sap. The male
cochineal is like tho femalo only during
the larva period. It changes into chrys
alis, and eventually appears as red flies.
Tho female deposits some thousands of
eggs, which sho protects under her body
until they are hatched, and on tho ap
pearance of tho young ones tho parent
dies. While tho young are in ilio larva
state their sex cannot bo determined.
They lose their skin several times, and
while tho femalo fixes herself on tho
plant, the male, after getting over tho
pupa state, is winged. Two or three
months is the extent of tho lifo of these
little insects. They are gathored before
they lay eggs, and are then rich in color
ing matter.
Carmine is prepared from tho cochi
neal insect, tho Coccus acti, which is col
lected by brushing tho branchos of tho
cactus with the tail of a squirrel or other
animal; this is very tedious work. They
are killed by immersing them in boiling
water, and this has to bo done at once,
or they would lay their eggs, and there
by lose much of their value. There are
many processes for preparing tho car
mine. Tho French process may bo
taken as on example: One pound of
powdered cochineal insects is boiled for
tiftecn minutes in three gallons of water;
one ounce of crcnm of tartur is then
added, and tho boiling continued ton
minutes longer ; then one ounce and a
half of powdered alum is thrown in, and
tho boiling continued for two minutes
longer. Tho liquid is then poured off,
and set asido for tho carmine to sottlo
down. In other processes oarbouato of
soda or potash is used.
A HAPPY COMMUNITY.
Haw the Pimple ol on Ohio Village Lund
I.ljreo ol Contentment,
[From the Cleveland Herald.]
About eighty miles from Cleveland
and six miles south of Mineral Point, tho
terminus of tho Valley road at tho
Wheeling junction of tho Wheeling k
Lake Erie Railroad, there is a quaint
little old villago known ns Zoar, inhab
ited by a Btrange, frugal and industrious
jH'oplo, the happiest perhaps, in the
world. They know no care; nothing
worries and troubles them. A large
numlior of them never saw the outsido of
their beautiful home, a veritable paradise,
and troublo themselves little, if any,
about the turmoil and strifes of tho
wicked world.
The colony was first founded in 1817
by Huber and Ackermann, two Germans,
tho former a nativo of Wurtemburg, and
tho latter hailing from Bavaria. Shortly
afterwards, in the snmo year, they and n
few followers from tho same country
formed a community and named it Zoar,
because they looked upon their homo as
a place of refuge from the world, which
they termed Sodom and Gomorrah.
The first two houses which lluber and
Ackermann built in 1817— quaint, antique
structures—are still inhabited by the
descendants of tho two pioneers. They
are built of logs and mortnr and contain
but one large room, sparsely furnished.
The windows are small, each containing
nine panes of glass about six inches
square. The roofs are covered with tiles,
as are those of all the houses erected up
to 1850, when the art of tile-making died
out in Zoar.
The inhabitants, who have no desire
to amass wealth, work for one common
end—that is for the good of the com
munity, which owns and controls the
village, including thousands of acres of
the richest land in the Buckeye fitato.
The money goes into one common treas
ury,the necessaries of life, including food,
provisions and garments, are furnished
by the village officials, consisting of three
trustees and a committee of five, who are
annually elected by ballot. The village
contains about 300 inhabitants, which
number has been tho same since 1817
and never increases or decreases to any
noticeable extent. There are no preach
ers, but all the peoplo are devout, wor
shiping after the manner of the Friends.
The marriage vow is held sacred and
the laws are rarely broken.
A Teller’s Speculation.
An interesting story is told of tho way
in which a paying teller of one of tho
8t Louis banks, of a shrewd and provi
dent turn of mind, was able to acquire n
competency in a short time, and then
retire from his position without tho bank
having been any tho loser by the oper
ation, and without having his own repu
tation blasted. Tho story is that the
bank carried a heavy cash balance to
moot such calls as might be mode upon
it from day to day, and to draw upon in
caso of a run. This was intrusted to tho
paying toller. Instead of allowing this
sum to romnin in tho bank’s safe, os was
tho intention of tho directors, and as
they supposed to Ire nctually the case,
tho teller invested largely in fi per cent,
bonds and early issues of the Govern
ment 4 per oents. These wore substi
tuted for tho cash, tho investor cutting
off the ooupons and getting the money
on them as they became payable. The
prospective calls upon tho cash could be
r eadily estimated, and anything beyond
that limit was converted into bonds.
This state of affairs went along smoothly
for about two years, the enterprising tel
ler enjoying all the privileges ns to cou
pons of a bloated bondholder.
Soon after tho Oby Owen defalcation
became public, tho directors had a sud
den spasm of vigilance, and ono dny,
without a moment’s warning, they called
upon the teller for his keys, and wore
about to institute a count of cash.
With an assurance and nerve that struck
the investigating directors fairly speech
less, he said: "Gentlemen, you caunot
have tho keys. I will give you my writ
ten resignation, according to the terms
of our contract, but you shall not have
tho keys to tho safe. ’’
The gentlemen were taken completely
by surprise, and knew not what to say
or do. Arrest was threatened, but tho
tidier was obdurate, and tho directors
finally withdrew to talk tho matter over.
This gave him his chance, and slipping
out with tho surreptitiously purchased
bonds, ho speedily converted them into
cnsli, and tho right amount was deposited
in the vaults. By that timo tho objection
to tho surrender of the keys was removed,
and the directors and bondsmen, who
hail been thoroughly nonplussed and
thoroughly frightened by tho refusal,
found their lionpcd-np thousands secure
Mid tho bank on ns sound financial bed
rock ns it had ever been, Tho fact that
tho tellor had just disposed of a large
amount of bonds, however, led to the
discovery of tho way in which ho had
boon using tho funds of tho bank for his
own emolument, and tho resignation
went into effect, During tho timo be
tween the purchase and sale of tho bonds
they had largely appreciated in value,
50 that during the transaction tho teller
had cleared between $50,000 and $00,000
from the rise in value and the coupons.
Tho bank was none the poorer from the
operation, and attempts made to compel
the employee to disgorge his profits
were unavailing. Public prosecution
would havo given tho affair unpleasant
notoriety for both parties, and tho story
has consequently been closely kept.
MlSKP.—An engineer and a fireman
on an English locomotive had been at
work fifteen hours, previous to which
they had been out all night on a spree.
Tho Consequence W’as that they fell
asleep simultaneously at their posts
while ou n rapid run, and, as their
locomotive had no train attached, there
was nobody to discover the danger until
they dashed past a siding where they
should have stopped. Then word was
telegraphed ahead, and they were awak
ened by torpedoes on the rails.
A Cumors Pr.ANT.—A citizen of Read
ing, Penn., is the ownor of a curious
plant, known ns the urga tree, which
came originally from Australia. It is
about three feet in height; and tho
flower is large nnd of a deep red color.
When the sun sets its leaves fold, and
the ends of the twigs coil up, apparently
going to sleep. Tile yoifnger leaves al
ways go to sleep first. When removed
from the pot in which it matures, the
leaves begin to stand out in all direc
tions, nnd the whole plant quivers ns
though enraged. At the same time it
gives out a sickening perfume.

A remarkable affair, which aptly illus
trates tho state of society in Constanti
nople, lias (a newspaper correspoiulenl
says) just been hushed up. On tho in
formation of tho detective jiolico of Peru,
a number of persons were arrested a few
: weeks ago for making counterfeit coin.
Flic evidence for tho prosecution showed
many discrepancies, and one of tho do
tectives, Incoming alarmed, declared
that the accusation was false, made with
the object of extorling money, and that
the falso coins and implements bad been
concealed in the houses of the accused
by tho deteotives themselves. This rev
elation caused a general panic among
the detectives, and other scandals were
divulged. Upon this tho Hultau ordered
an investigation, which brought to light
lie fact that the polioe of Poru have for
the jinst four years been systematically
in partnership with professional crimi
nals, that there has been a regular di
vision of spoil lietween them, and that
the police have given facilities for rob-
iiories both before and after the fact. It
was also shown that a profitable business
in false accusations has been systemati
cally carried on, the detectives finding
the subjects, the police arresting them,
and the detectives negotiating their ran
som. As an instance of the profitable
character of the business, the corre
spondent mentions that on searching n
box belonging to the doorkeeper of an
exalted official connected with the police,
2,000 Turkish gold pieces were found,
besides a number of valuable articles of
jewelry. The investigation was pursued
to tl’.e point where it was about to com
promise a person of great wealth, re
cently acquired, whose palace friends
f( mnd means to obtain an order for tho
suppression of the inquiry. It is said
'hat these very friends urged tho Sultan
to begin the investigation, well knowing
that at a certain point the person in
question would pay liberally to get the
proceedings quashed.
