A CURIOUS RUSTIC CHAIR.
“THE GEORGE HILL CASE.”
New )t the Week
Mr. Nftthan Brooke, abant three
railo below Canton, haa made a
double chuii that ia an lageuiaus
cnriasity. It ^ia made at swump
i?y. The posts, rounds and back
•re jast as tbe wood grew. The
middle partition is a forked bush,
the large end being next the floor
and tne two limbs of tbe folk ex*
tending to the top of tbe back.
It is just that sort of a piece of
furniture that can't be described.
It is worth a trip from here to Mr.
Brooke’s to seo it, and oao must
see it to appreciate its strange
and ingenious construction.
A GREAT MAN.
We learn that it is the opinion
of one of the paragons of intellec
tuality, one ot tbe subscribers ef
the Advance, that an editorial
which appeared last week was a
rreat ''display of ignorance.”
Such ignorance is some times
caused by waut et braies. But
with an editor it eftener oecnrs
tor the want ef money. Specially
who.i u subscriber, takes, reads
and ATTKMPrs to criticise, aud nev
er pays one cent ter the paper, or
the work done by the printer, bnt
ofteu gobbles up that which is paid
to him by ethers, tor work dene
by the printer.
SIXES CBMETKRY.
The grave yard near the "Sixes
Baptist church,” is ia a beaatiful
locality. Seme oi the graves are
marked with pretty slabs aud raan-
uments, same of them cestly,
speaking well for tbe litiag friends
of the once worthy dead.
The locality and the once metal
lives et those new keneath this
ground, deserve iimre geueral care
in cleaning up ana repairing what
was once a pretty spot.
A GOOD COUNTRY.
On last Sunday, we went with
Mr. llenry |Stecle, from "Sixes
Church to bis hsmo for dinner.
Mr. Stscle is a grain producer and
owns on# of the bast plantations in
this county. He has everything
that one could wish, all of his own
raising. Usrses. cattle, hogs, poul
try otall varieties, among the num
ber are 19 pea fowls.
We can see nothing that he
In un article with the above cap
tion, the writer stimulated by a
dcsiro to inform himself, asks seme
questions. As no one is upon the
witness stand,I presume they were
addressed to those who have the
management of the case. The
term of the article Is, that justice
ia delayed, pauishment is deferred
and that seme body is to blame;
new if this is true, tbe parties at
fault,must bo the Attorneys who
manage .the case. Are they to
bletne? Can any one say I hat they
have insisted upon anything hat
tbe plain legal rights ol Hill?
Rights gnarantsed to every citizen
of Georgia even the. humblest.
Would this writer, who would
make baste te shed blood ask ter
less were he in the cure iblc? I
imagine that he’would clamor far
all el them even if it bankrupted
tbs county. Would he accord less
thuu this to Hill ? This article not
only attaches blame te Hill’s At
torneys, bit is a reflection upon
Judge Brown vigilant aud prompt
as he is to execute the law. Has
he permitted Hill’s Attorneys te
tamper wirh justioe and delay
puuishment without lawful excuse
The veriest simpleton can answer
this questioa. It is a sorites thing
to take humaa life. The law per
mits as te do so .under certain cir
cumstances; but before we assume
snch a terrible responsibility, we
must be sore tbat we have com
plied with its rules. It we. fail te
do this te the strict letter the right
decs not exist, at the first term
the Court after the Bill of Indict
ment was found, It'll stood Jhie
trial, Wo make no war apou tbe
Jury they acted under eath. Goo
fiiil selected them as men into
whose hands he was willing to en
trust hiB liberty, bis life, bis all.
They found him guilty. The right
ef appeal is guaranteed any citisen
of Georgia. The court el appeal,
tbe highest tribunal known the
law, decided that error nud been
committed, and must he rectified.
The case was scut back and stood
fer trial At the last term ef the
court. Bill’s counsel made a mo
tion for a ceutinuance, and his
Honor, (who docs know the law)
decided it was a good and legal
shewing and luat Hill was entitled
to a continuance} can the writer
filled with the spirit ef inqniry
find any objection to this ? That
the writers stock ef lagal ki ow
let! g© is scanty is patent, far in his
first sentence, he refers to Hill as

a criminal and further as a mur
derer, when in a legal sense he is
presumed te be innocent, and in
the eye ef the law ia simply an
unfortunate man charged with a
high crime. He is to day in the
eye ef the law as though he had

The sentence contained in the
letter part of the writers article is
simply the language of a mob, ex
cited to fury and clamoring fer
blood. Or else the writer has
taken very little trouble to inform
bimself. It has been jest six months
since Hill steed his trial at an ad
journed term called for that pur
pose as he may see if he will num
ber bis fingers from April till the
preseut. The Supreme court de
cided (say friend te the contrary)
that he did not have a fair trial as
any body who reads the newspa
pers could have told him. Now ]
ask this thoughtless writer, if he
is net willing for Hill to have all
his legal rights and a fair trial even
if it takes time and is attended
with expense, and if he will deal
as he would be dealt by he will
surely say yes.
