THE VAST PINK BELT OK
SOUTHEAST TEXAS.
While taking a trip from New
Orleans to Galveston, your corres
pondent happened to get off at
Beaumont,and took a trip through
the dome pino forest of Soothe t
Texas. But before giving an ac
count of the pineries, it would bo
well to say something in regard to
Beaumont, its resources, etc., etc.
First, it line a grand water supply
being built on tho banks of the
Neltues River, and a great deal of
timber is brought there by that
means. It lias some of tho ('most
saw mills that any country can
beast, and produces the best long
leaf yellow pine and cypress Inm-
ber made in tho United States.
There are soverul line buildings,
the most noticeable of which nre
the hotels, opera house, court
etc., these nre all wooden construc
tion. The people aroef that hos
pitable gonial disposition, that is
so pointedly characteristic ol tho
seutheru race.
It was a bright clear morning
when I started out on my trip
through tho woods. I thought I
would have the advantage of huv
idg u good view of tho country
blit after 1 had goto a tew milts
the timber got so dense, one could
hardly see 100 yards uheud of him,
bo close are these pino treet. But
tho people of Texas are not blind
to this gold mine tl timber.
About every ten miles along the
line vi the lailroad tliyro is a small
town,the two principal are Beuutzo
a.el Woodville. Many largo auw
mills are in constant operation all
ulong the line of the road, seme
close to each other and others miles
apart. ’J he largest of these are
the Sunset Mill, operated by Mess
Olive L Stevenberry; also large
mill men at Boaumon',known here
as the Sunset mills.
Tho principal Bottlers all through
the country nre from that good old
State Georgia, many who have
come hero to seek fortunes, but
who lmve become bo familiar with
the piney woods ol Texas that they
prefer to live hero. Laborers are
voiy scarce, and $1,75 and $2,00
is tho regular price paid for inex
perienced hands. 'iho ceuutry
soem* to bo dcveleping very fast,
und every one ns soon ns ho has
sufficient w o a ljtli accumulated,
bu lids a licuse and begins to make
improvements. Yet there is still
something more important than
oven tho timber; In a small town
about eight miles from tho town of
Bauntzo >s ‘‘Sour Lake Spring/’
tnking its name from tho sourness
ol tho water, not alone is there a
sour spring, but tar water, sulphur
water, and in fact any kind of mm-
oral water can be obtained, also
oil can easily be obtained by bo
ring a few feet iute the ground, u
gas which lights as gas would, is
easily obtained. All these vari
ous spiings are excellent for vari
«us diseases, hut us yet are a now
feature i» the world at large.
Yours, &c. A.O. Harris

A DREAM.
On last Saturday night, our

chained both aoul and body to the

In his dream he was lost in an

While flitis sinking—slashing
through tho mud, rushed three
mad bulls on dire mischief intent
— One reminded him of the bull of
“Bashan,” ono other resembled
the buffalo, while the third was ub
black as night, ami blood ruu
from his eyes, meuth and enrs.
The culmination of misery was be
fore him,and horror froze his soul
Every effort t > extricate himself,
sank him i. ill deeper and deeper.
Mr. MeNaiin struggled with

relieved. Whnt u change! The
bloody Lltn ti buil was Geoige Ilill

He screamed with joy and George
