Thus it will bo seen that Canton's pro
gress has been study aud kept pace with
the towns which have c Mated eo much
excitement, All tho honses above
enumerated are splendid uuildings and
Hand fur years as monuments to Cantons
thrift and enterprise. Tl oso mentioned
ihuve together witli those here previous
to 1870 covers censidertb'e territory snd
gives anCton an estimated population of
600, There is not a vacant dwelling not
business bouse in town and the McAfee

summtr months they sro overrun. The
demand is grrotcr than than the supply,
Cimton coatinuce to improve— in fact L
on a boom—tha trowtli, hammer ard saw
every day adds something now.
Summing up the numi>er of houses
ouilt and otherwise improved during
and since 1870 wc find sixty-nine dwe i-
mgs, lint teen stores, 4 wareh-.uses, twe
swam gins, thiee steam (lour and grist

Tho enumeration above will of course
carry with it the idea of the increaee in
population. In 1870 ihe population 01
Canton was 200; ia 1800 it waa 80'J; and
now it ia asUuiated at not leea tbaa 000.
Cherokee county in 1070 had a popula
tion of 10,107; in 188U, 14820 ; and now
set less than 10,000,
Wilde Canton has so materially, and,
we may say, mysteriously changed aad
improved during the past five yeara the
ocunty g'utrally haa mauitesfod this en
atpriseabd gone rapidly forward. At
some future time we will attempt .0
show you what strides of advancement
have beoa made over the county, You

It wa* seemingly tha desire of every oae
to make some one happy. Wa have nut
heard of one, old or young, rich or paor,
high or Inw, who did not enjoy a merry,
merry Christmas ia a saber, quiet aad
respectable manaer withaut any drunk*

toward anyone.
Among the entertainments given for
the enioyment ol the young wa w- Id
mention, first—The richly laden Chn t-

After the preseata were distributed thn
happy th.ong ef children waa dismissed
and the remainder of the evening untill
the wee hours cstne was given ovar totht
young gentlemen and lsdiea who quit*
pleasantly spent the time slotted them
in *a enjoyable dance. It is nredlaaa ta
say thst the children were overjoyed aad
the adults delighted.

delivered ta the hepuy throng of anxious
aud impatient children wh* received
them with outatreched arms and merry
shouts of joys and rauiraed horn# Hied
with emotions such a* all of aa bars ia
our childhood days experienced.
O11 nhe following day the sun bright
and clear ami wna quietly ushered in and
remained so in ovideueo that one day waa
enough to obtervo fer 'Christine*. At
night, however, theenjoymsnt continued.
In the evening a delightful sociable aad
dance waa given th* young folk* at thw
residence of P. P. DuP;0s Thursday
evening quite a recherche affair was
given at the McAfee House in which the
I.ancers, Waltzes, (juadrilles, Polkas,
Hicillian and other daucre played quite
a conspicuous part. Friday at tua reai-
deace ef Mrs. 'Galt's the oven ing was
quite pleasantly spent in a sociable com
posed of interesting plays, vocal aad in
strumental music, etc. Through the
kindness of Rev. N. N. Edge end wife
a merry crowd of the children gathered
at the McAfee House, and, oh 1 *ich a
aice, delightful timo they did have!
Altogether this was one of the most
enjoyable Christum* for many years.
AU seemed happy and joyoaa and every
thing patted off' pleasantly. Be it said
to the credit ef our town aad her citizens
that no ill uukonneas aad but little whisk
ey drinking waa indulged to. Tbotowa
was full of vmitors and our citizens tried
to ntnk* everything aa dleasant aad de
lightful for them as poasiblo.
Our wishes are that all may live to eo>
joy another as happy Christmas as this
wa*. Having spent a “Merry Christmas”
wo wish yon a “Happy Mew Year.’’
