LITTLE FRECKLE FACE.
Nearly everybody in tlio noiglilxirhoisl
despised T,ittlo Freekle Face. Hire wiut
viciona ntnl dislioniwt. Whenever any
depredation was commuted, or any tri
fling article left out of doors wan missing,
Littlo Freokle Fuco was at once hub-
]M‘Cted. No ono knew her light name.
Hhe was found on tho roadside after a
pary of immigrants had passed along.
When asked concerning her name, she
made Bomo childish reply which no one
could understand. A poor blacksmith
took her home with hint, and partly ow
ing to hm limited resources—having been
bard run In tlnding names sntlicient for
bis own children—and partly on aeconnt
of tho innumerable freckles which tho
child wore like a speckled mask, Hhe was
called Little Freckle Face. The black-
smith'a wife, at whose instance tho waif
had found a home, such as it waa, soon
died and hor own children were taken
by numerous relatives leaving Littlo
Frecklo Faoo with tho “son of tho
forge.” lie parted from his children
without regret, and ho would gladly
have given nj> Little Freckle Face, but
no one who was willing to take her could
be found. Uncart'd for and nevermore
than half-clothed, tho child grew to bo
eight or nino years old. Blto was sent
to school, but sho was noon driven away
on account of the sad havoc she created
among the dinner buckets. Tliis was
lioriio with until the teacher found his
turnip greens liberally sprinkled with
sand. Ife knew immediately who had
oommitted tho outrage, and declaring
that he could stand great imposition,
bnt that no one, male or female, could
receive instruction from him after
“tampering” with his greens, a dish of
which lie was particularly fond, com
manded Littlo Frecklo Face to go away
and never to come back again.
There was but one human being for
whom Little Freckle Face had any love,
and that was a very small boy in short
dresses, the sou of the school-master.
Bhe would stand for hours at tho yard
fence and amuse him, but she was not
allowed to cross the fence, and even any
communication whatever with the little
fellow was forbidden.
“I want yon to gnawny from here and
leave my child alone,” said the scliisil-
master, one day when ho came home
from school and found Little Freckle
Face at the fence.

In a moment his littlo dress was on fire, |
and with a shriek and a strange agility, (
Littlo Freckle Face climbed tho fenon, |
*< Ized the boy and tore bis clothes from
him, but her own clothing, a miserable
cotton drees, took fire and in a moment
*he was enveloped in a sheet of flame.
Several men and the acliool-maater, who
happened to be near, ran to her assist
ance, bnt too late. They took her into
the hnnso and latd her on a bed. Her
eyes were ao badly burned that she could
not see. but when ahe heard the school
muster speak, ahe raised her hands and
exclaimed:
“ Oh. you won’t whip me, will yon ? ”
“ No, my God 1 ” waa all the school-
mnster oonld ntter.
The doctor rnme but ho said thnt ho
could not be of any service. “ Slip can

“ Hhe has no people,” said some one.
“ Hhe was found on the roadside after nn
immigrant wagon had passed."
"Where?” asked the scltnol-masfer.
“A few miles from here She was too
young to tell hor name. Wo afterward
heard that she was stolen near Smith-
field.” Tho school master and his wife
stared at each otheriApeeehless horror,
" Hhe was found years before you enmo
to the neighborhood. Why, what is the
matter f”
" Great God,” exclaimed tho school
master, " ahe iB my daughter. Wo al
ways thought she was drowned, but tho
mystery is now explained. Mtjy the Lord
in heaven forgive—"
“ Is the little boy liurt ?" asked thedy-
; ng girl.
“No, my darling,” said the aohool-
miistcr, while Ins wife with a sob buried
tier face in tlio bed clothes. Little
Freckle Face started.
“Who called uie darling? I have
heard other people called thnt, but no
one over called me darling before,"
“My dear child, I am your father,
and hero is your mother. Wo did not
know it till now. You were stolen from
us when von were a little child.”
"When 1 ran away and played by the
river, she said iu it soft voice, and not
••veu tho ravages of tho fire could hide
ilie |mitceful expression that- settled on
her face, “God will love a little girl
that was stole from her mother," she
said. “I have heard about Fruit, but I
don’t know whether Ho knows mo or
not, but if he is good to tho girlH that-
had good clothes and somebody to love
what they wasn’t afraid to love, lie will
be gotsl to me for Ho will feel sorry—”
Hhe was dead.
The fattier and mother have never re

death, and us a constant reminder of her

Story of a Tame Fox.
In n number of the Newcastle dour-

there is a curious story of a tame fox
which had been brought up from a cub
at the White nart Inn at Bridgwater,
where ho had been trained to officiate us
a turnspit. The wild- strain breaking
out, he one day escaped, got nway to
Hedgmoor, and made sad havoo among
n flock of geese. A. puck of hounds
chancing to he out. found him iu covert,
and the fox, breaking, led them a long
and devious chase, but always making
for tho direction of his old home. ne
finally leaped tho fence of his mistress’s
garden, and, entering the kitchen,
darted to the spit and began to perform
his ottice quite unconcernedly. The
cook, with whom he was a great fa
vorite, hid him with her petticoats, at
the same time beating off the hounds.
But this, we are told, ‘ ‘would have been
unavailing if the huntsmen had not
whipped them off, and, after a chase ot
nearly thirty miles, left this unlicensed
l>oulterer to his domestic occupations.”
