Booth of tho Factory which was in an
open and elevated place; at tlmt time
there was a cion l pissing over from the
South, it see me 1 to bo a wind cloud
with a few scattering drops of tain, it
passed over very rapidly and settlod
down in the North West towards I’ino
Log mountain being fearfully dark and
tlmatuiug; then uunihor one gathered
quickly in tho south west, when it rr.sn
ami appr uicned nearer tho ono that had
passed over towards tho mountain begao
end liiu K a volmno of white clouds
which was met hy tho sumo kind from
the clouds iu the South west, they canto
together very rapidly ami aoented to lie
very angry us if roa.lv for battle. 1 said
to J/r black, who bad just come dowji
lrom off the liouio that we aro going to
have a cyclone, lie looked at tho
clouds for a moment and remarked did
you ever see clouds act so fttrungcly;
we took our stand in the door where wo
bad u plain view of bulb clouds. As
they more uaarly approached each other
tlu y looked more nrgry and terrible aud
when they Itegiiu to mingle: tho whito
clouds began to roll nriund each other
like a about. After this had gone on
fora few tnnnuuts, they ;htn formed
themsi Ives in tho shape of a Top or
1' Uunel. The dark clouds then rolled
over them lilcu a volume of dark dense
smoko from tho burning of stone-coal.
Goinpletcly hiding them from our view,
Making it almost, as dark as night; about
lids time thu monster was termed in
period slinpo and ready for its work of
desolation and death It theu began te
move Not lb Fast, und just at this mo
ment we beheld the gr.imb st ami most
•earful sight that bus ever been our
fortune to aec; This monster that had
been enveloped bv the dark clouds canto
out in lull view, it hud lowered by this
time that thu form of the Cyclouu was
among toe trees; it seemed that it tmd
gathered tho water uh very little came to
the ground, in tact I know wo could sea
tlie water in it it wa* now whirling
round like a top, we could see tree. I ops
and other debris whirling with it at a
terific speed; wo were about two hundred
yards Irotu it and could sec occasionally
u pieev of timber passing from it; it
made a kind of (fizzing sound us it passed
In almost a twink e it struck the Facto
ry Village blowing down most of tho
huge trees unrooting houses, chimneys,
fences, etc. and destroying nearly evory
thing in its path; fortunalely no ono was
liuri ut this place but how we all escaped
NueniB almost, a miracle. As it passed on
It increased in violence and sweeping
manly every thing before it; it was
about two hundred yards wine on an
average, some times less and seme tunes
moie owing lo tho (levation ordeprets-
ion of tlu land. Cyclones are not so
frequent in mountains ns m level or
pararic countries, or nt least they are
not no easily formed and find greater
obstruction than iu more level countr
ies, hut the same i e aunts that creates
them exist li re as in all other pluccs,
Wh it once formed ami set in motion
nothing seems to obstruct their progress.
I f as the Scientists say they will bo nmro
Irupicut hero iu tho future, it would
lie wise in us to prepme for such enter-
g.noios by making excavations in the
siiliH of the hills und innunains where we
c mid in tieal with some degree of safety
these places should be made near the
dwelling as they come with wonderful
npi.lity and do no* g ; vo any one time
for a long journey. There is but ono
thing l know of to be said in its favor
and Unit is they are of slioit duration,
not lasting but a lew seconds, you have
scarcly tiiho to realize the situation ; not
»o however in places where they are
inme frequent as persons there can form
a pretty correct idea of their near ap
proach. It is to be sincerely hoped that
no more dink monsters as this will ever
again darken our land, Onr pecuniary
losses can be repaired but those who have
been badly hurt and killed can not be
restored. 1 have, been in perils on laud
und iu deep waters nu sea but of all
tilings above or bcl^w deliver me from a
cyclone. Respectfully,
