On Tuesday evening ol li,s *
\m>k Mr .1. Colins, J. T.
Wheeler, ami the Editor of tliis
pupor procured tieke s mid board
ed the train enroute to Columbus
Oa, to attend the “Eleventh aiinn
... meeting of the Ooorgin State
Sunday Seiiool Ahso< iution” and
thereto feebly represent the good
old county of Cherokee in the great
and grand Sunday School work.
Mr F. 11. Chandler, proceeded us
one day. Our first and only mishap
was at Marietta where on account
of the recent wrecks on the “State
Hoad” no train could lie had until
Wednesday morning. Had we
made close connect ions at V arietto
ami Atlanta on Tuesday evening
we could have reached Columbus
early Wednesday imutiing by trav
eling nearly all night. However
we were only one day late but the
lorn of that day from the Associa
tion was amply repaid in viewing
the rich and fertile farms, enehunt-
iug scenery and almost new and
lieautilul towns along the line of
roads leading from Atlanta to Col
umlms Ua, via Q|K*lika Ala. Our
spjoiirn was made the more pleas
ant by meeting and traveling with
J>r 1*. It. Oortelyou, of Marietta,
President of the Cobb county Sun
day School Associotion. We reach
ed Columbus at 7:.‘10 I’. M. and was
met by the “Committee of lteeep
tion” who kindly asnigned iih to
homes near each other. MesHers
Coggins and Wheeler stopped with
Mrs Stewart, Hr Cortelyou at the
Terry House, while it was the
good fortune of the writer to atop
with Col. J.S. Carrett and family,
Columbus is a city of some 25,00
or more souls, situated in Muscogee
county in So it h west Georgia outlie
banks of the Chattahoocoee river
the line between Georgia and Ala.
the city is lieautiful laid off; the
Htreets aie very broad with lovely
shade trees and 1 leant iful green
parks in the ceuter of each; all
streets, stores, and residences are
lighted with gas and electric lights;
supplied with water from the water
works; there are nine large cotton
factories, iron furnace, bagging fac
tory, cotton seed oil mill etc. oper
ating upon a capital of near $7,500.-
000 and employing 5.000 or wma
bauds; there are several wholesale
grocery, hardware, dry goods, to
bacco, liquor and other houses do
ing a large and protitablo business
liesides a number of retail houses
of almost every variety; the An-

In'st dailies in the State, keep their
citizens promptly a> d reliably pos

the oldest Military com panics in the
State, the Columbus Guards, were
preparing while we were there for

quick time as any company in the
State. Some four or more rail
roads pass through this city and
the people are projecting for anoth

Altogether Columbus is one of the
prettiest, nicest cleanest, and pop
nlated with the cleverest, moB
hospitable and sociable )>coplc of
any city in the State and our stay
there was a most delightful and
pleasant one; we long to go again
when we will have more leisure to
visit the nianv places of interest
and then more space to tell our
readers of the visit and what all we
saw when we return, wo
trust our readers will ]>ermit us
this time to say no more of Colum
