At the Chicago Robublicnn Convention
lMt week Janie* O. Blaine of Maine, and
John. A. Logan of Illinois, fiw nomina
ted on tho 4th ballot Republican nomi
nees for President and Y ice President.
We look upon thia ticket no doubt like
the Republican leaders did, aa being the
strongest in the party. They will pool
a large rote and possibly a majority unless
the Democrats are very wise and discreet
in the nomination of the saandard bear
ers of the Democratic party. think
Tillden and Hendrick* can defeat the Re-
pnblican ticket but are quite doubtful
whether any other could. Ihere are
many in the democratic party w ho an*
lust aa good men as .Tilden it Hendricks
hut none in our opinion who can whip
the fight ao easily and overthrow the Re
publican rulers ao completely na Tilden
£ Hendricks, who seem to he the choice
of the whole country.
The Rebiililicau nominees are good
men and if elected will mako as faithful
©dicers as we have had for ninny years
and the country at large is aware of tins,
it therefore behooves tho Democrats to
set wisely and in aniannor that will as
suredly unite all opposition for their
nominee.
This is simply our view s only.

there will be but little difficulty lu mak-

himself. We have not heard a word of
complaint from any source against him
or h!a course in Congress except from
Gainesville, Col. ( analer's home, where
there seems to be some personal opposi

Candler beat th# race two years ago
when ha had a well organized victorious
opposition to meet, and while he was but
little known in half the districts. And
we believe ho will be nominotad by accla

A few weeks since wo intimated
that a vote on Prohibition was
wanted by a number of citizens.
We have since looked into the sub
ject a little and examined the law
and find that there is no act au
thorizing the people of Cherokee to
call ao election. Wo Wish there
was, for we Itelieve a majority at tho
polls would say give us a county
free of whiskey and its damning
influences. At present no whiskey
is sold in the county except by the
(lovernmetil Distilleries in qiianitics
not less than one gn Ion. There are
no quart license granted to any
one in the county and strict y
speaking the sale o whiskey is al
most prohibited. One wav pro
hibitionist of the county can secure a
vo e or wi|»e whiskey from our conn

ltepresenative who will take a bold
stand against whisky and rally to
its over throw. Sec to it then you
