Last Monday quite a heavy rain fell iu

the clouds were very dark and threatening

though the wind blowed pretty hard and
those who hml pits went into them. Wo

needed in all parts of the county.

Canton Ac^«l«mr
On last Saturday morning the citizens
of Cauton belli a meeting ut the court
house for the purpose of again agitating
the need of a good and suhstentiai brick
Academy in Canton. O. W. Putnam
was celled to the chair and Ben. F. Perry
n quested to act as Secretary,
Several speeches and talks were made
'■netting forth the many advantages to be
gained by the town and tho county at
this time by going to work and building
a neat comfortable and commodious
school soo’ii. Wc wore glad to see such
enthusiasm manifest itself and trust it
may continue to grow untill we have a
school building which any North Geor
gia city might be justly proud of—there
is no doubt tint that we need an Academy
badly and in fact can not hope to edu
cate the children of the town nmi county
in sue.h a manner as will cause them to
hlocitn into manhood and womanhood an
honor to their parents, the town, county
anil country at large. True we have two
very competent lady teachers and one
male teacher with tlourishing schools but
what Canton and Cherokee needs is a
good school under the care nnd manage
ment of competent male teachers who
can make the unruly boys nnd girls
know to “toe the mark” and bend their
energies to their studies. Wo need a
school of this kind not only fora few
months but the entire year. We can
never get it until we first get the house.
Wo are glad that an effort to build the
house at once is again on foot and wc
trust the Interest and enthusiasm will
not die out until we see the brick Acade
my In Canton standing as a monument to
the generous, noble hearted, public spiri
ted men and women of Canton and Cher
okee who are striving to place their town
and county on a higher plane education
ally, religiously, morally, socially, and ti-
nniieiullv. Canton and Cherokee is alike
interested in this noble movement.
U. T. Jones and Jabez Galt made a
motion or motions which was carried,
the substance of which were about as
followi ; That a Committee of live be
appointed to select subscriptions for
the Academy building, that when the
sum of ftjt.nuo or more bo subscribed then
the subscribers to be bound and not
until then; a meeting then be called and
an architect employed to furnish the
plans for the best brick building that
could bo built for the amount subscribed,
that one third of the subscription be
called in when the brick was burnt,
one third when walls were put up and
the balance when the house was comple
ted. A committee consisting of It. r.
Joiioh, lion. K. l*erry f M. H* Britt, N. •».
Wheeler and II. 8. Tolbert was appointed
and instructed to begin at once to solicit
aid. This committee was also rvqiiested
to examine into the titles of the Acade
my lot iu front of J. M- Hudsons resi
dence, where it is proposed to locate
the Academy. „ , . . .
We bid this move God speed and do
hope and trust that this time the desired
end may he accomplished. Every olio
in Cherokee county should help and en
courage this movement. It our mutual
ail vantage educationally and otherwise
500 will build a very good brick house
and it does seem to us that this amount
can be easily and quickly raised in good
old Cherokee.

In order to induce alurgecrowd

grandest walking match of the
season the rates on the M. A. N.
Ga. R.R.has been greatly re-
ducod and a forge crowd is expec

from Marietta to Ellijay. The day
will be a jolly oue and every body
should cunm uffd enjoy the rare fan
—you may never again be given

A ud just ao it will and ‘‘don’t you

walkers have never been beaten
in a match of this kind and never
expect to bo. Let every bedyand

ere aot excepted.
The walkers confidently expect
to bmat>h Macon, mash Atlanta and
tlup the flying Dutchman back in
to Germany. Don’t fail to come
and see the hoys “git up and git.”
Again we w.U say that the walk
ing match is the all absorbing topic
and as the time approaches the ex
citement increases. In fact it is in
the nature ot an epidemic and the
contagion is general. Every body
believes lie can beat everybody else
and wan s to try it. 1 hey all kuow
they can beat the .VIaeon time and
they mean to do it. Challe iges
lor 2, 10 or 20 miles fi l the air as

other without taking him by the
button ho 0 and telling him confi
dentially that Niekerso will make
forty miles in six hours or that Cog
gins will come in on t e home

Any number of matches ere
booked for future dates. The ten
tear olds have the tracx for Satur

like trying to run over some body.
