A Tory pretty girl, attired in ft long

skin bag with initials in silver on the
outside, stood ftt a crossing waiting for
a ear. A youth ot about 21 or 22 years
was also awAiting the oar, And he ooca*
siotiftlly glanced at the pretty girl, who
turned indignantly nway from him.
When the car stopped the youth stood
at the bnok step to assist the maidon to
enter, but she wheeled about when sho
noticed bis gallant intention And went in
by the front door. The youth smiled
languidly, entered tho car and sat down
opposite the pretty girl, ot tho front
window, whereupon she angrily turned
and lookod out at the horses.
Tho conductor observed this panto*
mimo, and regarded the youth with a
scowl. Whon he begftn to collect fares
at the front ond tho young lady got out
her purse, while tho youth was fooling
In his pocket, and paid her transporta
tion fee. The youth handed the con
ductor a dime, without noticing that
tho pretty girl had paid, and said:
“Two." The conductor handed him
back five cents, with an ugly glance,
and the girl looked harder at tho horses
than ever, whereat the youth smiled
with a great deal of amusement. An
old gentleman got into the car and sat
down near the girl, the oonductor kept
his eyes upon tho youth. Other imsseu-
gors entered and a polioemau stood upon
tho platform with the conductor.
Presently the old gentleman noticed
that the youth kept his eyes npon tho
pretty girl, and smiled whonover she
dared to turn her glance away from the
window, and that her eyes fairly biased
with anger as sho turned from him. The
oonductor spoko to tho policeman, nnd
polioeman, conductor, old gentleman,
and all the rest of tho passengers begar.
to glare at the youth. The old gentle
man was the first to interfere.
“What do you mean, sir,” ho said,
“by annoying this youug lady in that
outrageous manner?”
The youth stopped smiling and said,
softly ; "If it isn’t too muoh trouble, I'd
be muoh obliged if you’d mind your
own business."
“You young puppy 1" roared tho old
gentleman. “I'll see to you I I’ll see

"Oh, don't; please don’t do any
thing I" said the protty girl, imploring
ly. “Please don’t mako a scene 1”
"My dear young lady,” said tho old
gentleman, gallantly, “yon shall not bo
embarrassed, I assure you, but I lmvo
daughters myself, and it is a duty I owo
to the publio to mako an examplo of this
scamp. Conductor I”
The oonductor advanced very willingly
into the oar, followed by tho policeman,

“A girl of thirteen cannot docido,

decide distinctly whether it is her wish

life.
“The education by which you moan

Nearly all the officers became drunk on

A Berner Juryman.
A dispatch from St. Louis, Mo., says:
L. A. Phillips, one of tho jurors who
tried tho Berner ease in Cincinnati, was
interviewed by a reporter. He says ho
came to establish a branch of his carpet
cleaning workB hero and will probably
remain. He says that tho jurors bo-
lievod that Berner was forced by threats
to aid in the murder of Kirk, and that
they refused to believe tho alleged con
fession, bocause they were satisfied it
was obtained by bulldozing and starva
tion methods, no did not know the
Berner family at all, but he wanted the
young man sent up for life. Seven ju
rors voted for acquittal on the first bal
lot, but ho held out for murder in tho
second degree. It was represented that
unless they agreod they could be kept
locked up for thirty-three days, and
their room was small and poorly venti
lated, so on Monday morning, sick him
self aud hearing of sickness in his fam
ily, he weakened aud compromised on n
twenty years’ verdict.
Phillips adds that tho murder was not
nearly so bad as lots of others, but the
newspapers selected Berner os a victim,
and when they failed to hang him in
cited the people to lynch tho prisoners.

have been five other eases of trichinosis

Of these only one has resulted fatally.
That was tho case of a butcher who was
