Mm the New York Hour.,
world of society and Gold sports
boa been kept busy in New York with
attendance* at tbe dog show, and if tbe
walls of the mnoh-tried Madison Bqnaro
Oarden could have spoken they would
have expressed relief oyer the ohange
from the horrors of the walking-match.
With its eighth annual Benoh Show the
Westminster Keuncl Club have capped
the olimax of its previous successes.
The number of dogs on tho bonob, com
ing not only from all parts of the United
States, but from Canada and England,
proves the popularity of the Club, while
the daily attendance of visitors is tho
strongest evidence that the Benoh Show
has become as mnoh an established
sporting feature for New York society as
the coaching parade, the opening of Jer
ome Park and kindred affairs.
It is singular how tho fashion in dogs
changes. Some years ago small dogs
were all the rage, and among them tho
png who looks like a concentrated maa-
Ufl, reigned supreme. The Italian grey
hound and the Bilk-haired spaniel ranked
neoU in estimation. Now, however,
large dogs are et the head of affaire, and
among them mastifffe have acquired an
asoendanoy undreamt of oven a year ago.
No would-be young swell, no young lady
aspiring to have a oomplete fashionable
eut-of-door make-up can afford to walk
the avenue in any other way tliau at
the end of e chain drawn taut by a lingo,
straggling brute of this order. At the
show there ere fifteen mastiff dogs
eleven bitchee end fourteen puppies
Among tbe lot ere three champion dogs
end two bitohes. This is oortainly
good showing. The winner in the oham
pion dog class, Noviaon, owned by Mr,
Meson, of Yorkshire, England, is
splendid animal. Ho is e fawn with
.blaok points, 4) years old, aud in tho
eourse of his wanderings has picked up
no Isos than 88 prises, not including
specials.
The St. Bernards hold tboir own
compared with previous shows, as also
do the Berghunds. The Newfoundlands,
however, have lost, and nnloas there
should be a revival in their favor, this
noble breed, whioh has given rise to so
much sentimentality in dog literature
and art, will soon be as rare as piebald
bones. Greyhounds, too, have fallen
ofl, perhaps not in number, but oertaiuly
in quality. This is to be deplored, for
although the racer of tho oanino world
may not be an affectionate house dog, or
even an attractive watcher, his looks
alone ought to bring kirn many admirers.
Practically, a new featuro is furnished
. at the show by tho deerhounds. Lust
year Micro was bnt ono, while this week
there were eighteen. They aro noble
specimens of tho onniuo race, combining
the graoeful linos of tho greyhound with
the siso and substance of the blood
hound, and tboir bristloy coats give
them an air of rnggod strength and de
termination wonderfully pioturesque.
Ono of tho prettiest sights af the show was
furnished by Mrs. Geo. Shephard l'agofi’
Dunrobin. He is a light, briudle, 3 years
old. His box was hung with dark-groeu
Scotch plaids, formiug a sombre back
ground, whioh made the silvery tips of
his hair fairly glisten. Ho was not iu
the first flight of prize winners, but us lie
lay extended iu his box, witli his head
erect aud his eye gazing clearly aud un
flinchingly at tho struuge sights about
him, he would have served us a splendid
model for au artist.
Pointers and potters of nil varieties
were exceedingly well represented, and
so high was the quality throughout that
iu many of tho classes the judges lind
considerable difficulty in arriving at a
decision. As a result, tho feeling of
rivalry between tho owners of different
dogs ran very high, and bets were freely
made. When the judges awarded tho
blue ribbon to Mr. Munson’s oluimpion
pointer Meteor, against Mr. Mason's
Beaufort, 85,000 changed bands. Point
ers seem to have had more attention
paid to them by breeders during the lust
year than setters, and among tho latter
elass, tho Euglisli variety bids fair to
crowd out the blnck-aud-tans aud Irish.
Spaniels, both field and ws ter, seem on
the verge of losing their hold on tho
public fancy, for they are neither numer
ously uor well represented. Fox-hounds
Are also poorly represented at the show,
fhe reason of this is that tho local
bunts, who have spared neither labor
nor money on improving this breed,
have been using their packs up to a
week or two ago, and thus, while tho
hounds may be tit as fiddles for a run,
they aie in no condition for tho bench.
Beagles hold their own ns compared
with former years, but they have made
no progress; the same may bo said of
the dachshunds- Fox terriers, however,
have improved greatly, both quantita
tively and qualitatively. There were
any number of perfect specimens nt the
show, The fox terrier is a beautiful
little animal and tho most all-around
useful small dog oxtant. It is pleasant
to see his merits recognized, dollies
have also received great attention bv
breeders during tho past Year, and bid
fair to supplant St Bernard’s in fashion-
able ®timation before another Bench
Show eomes sronnd. Bull-dogs and
bull terriers have fallen off somewhat,
particularly the latter. Ihe fox tenier
. has to -» great extent monopolized tho
plsoe ouoe ooonpied by his kinsman in 1
the bull-dog family. |
As regards tbe toy terriers, qnality is )
well represented, bnt tbe quantity lias
fallen off. Ladies, who ore the principal
owners of dogs of this olacs, seem to
have grown afraid to trnst their pots to
tho dangers of tbe benoh for a week, as
jiokness of some kind is always sure to
SXtack the pampered favorites daring
a few days absence from horns comforts.

The ofroarastanoes of one moat hereto
and romantic deed connected with the
la to Everingham disaster was related to
ns. After the boat had been banked
end a renter of the crew wee oalled, As
sistant Pilot Wingate-did not answer.
“Where is Wingate?” some one
shonted.
“Asleep, in his berth," wu the an
■wer.
By this time the rapports of the npper
deck wore boing oaten rapidly away, and
the flames circled round and round over
the hurrioane deok, licking the glees of
the ntate room doors, to disappear now
and anou through the black earls
dense and stifling smoke, then again to
streak tho blaok sky like the livid palse
of destruction that it was, and then to
■oar away and vanish into the oblivion
of heat to Bear the invisible atoms of
the air.
It won in the midst of this panorama
of horror that a black form was seen
rushing toward Wingate’s berth and im
pending death. A surge, a crash and
door gave way, and Wingate and his
resoner, through ways left free by Prov
idence, escaped in safety to tbe shore.
This negro, on hearing that Pilot Win
gate was in his state room, banished all
fear of his own safety to rescue him,
whioh was done in return for the saving
of his own life by Wingate when the
“Wylly” went to pieoes against the
Fort Goins bridge last April. He was
going nnder for the third time when
Wingate snatched him from his grave.
This was gratitude, aud a heroism
equalled by no instance in the calami
tous records of many and many a day,
and deserves e monument in marbia.
