I saw i young babe in its oradln. It

Old ago. It opened ita oyca and smiled,
and the children softly whispered to each
other: "Roe! Tho angels liavo been
talking to him, and he ia glad I"
1 a»r a youth aa he looked longingly
np the path leading to tamo and glory.
There was nprond flash in tho father's
eyo as lio saw tho boy come and go, and
the mother looked after him with swell
ing heart and whispered a prayer to
Heaven to keep her boy's footsteps from
wicked paths.
I saw a young man as lie stepped over
the threshold and mot tho grim world
with a smile of aolf-reliance.
Tho father was now wrinkled and gray,
hut there was fonder (lash to his oye as
lie listened to the applanse of the multi
tude. Tim mother wits aged nud feeble,
and toats canto into hor eyes ns she
murmured: "He is moving the hearts of
thousands by his eloquence, lint I pray
thee, Oh, Heaven to keep him pure and
free from sit) I” The children who had
whispered before were no longer chil
dren. They had also grown to man’i
estate. Home joined in tho applause -
some felt nutlioo nud envy commanding
them to alienee.
I saw a strong man in his prime, lie
had fame and wealth, a loving wife, .
happy children, beautiful home. Men 1
bowed before him. Mon Haltered him.
His voioo echoed ovor tho land ntul
stirred the pulses in oily and limn lot.
The father and mother were dead, anil
their lost prayers lmd been for lilm, lie
stood alone, but ho lmd tho support of
tho nation and the homage of a world.
Ho it seemed to him, but down in their
hearts men feared ntid envied aud hated
him.
I saw an old man an a winter's night
lettled gloomily down over tho desolate
laud.
Ho wna old and weak and hungry and
poor. lie wns thinly chid, and lie shiv
ered in tho raw air. Ho stood at the
comer, his tromhling hand held out in
mute apjH>nl to tho passers-by, lint nr.
«io gave him alnui. Homo had their
vision blinded by the falling (lakes—
4 horn mocked at and enrsed him. For
i long honr ho hungered aud asked only
for what would buy a crust of bread, and
then ho l>owod his head still lower and
draggod himself farther sway into tho
bitter darkness. And men called after
him in heartless tones: "Tho Conuty
House 1# tho plaeo for l>eggnrs I"
I saw a ntifT, frozen oorpao at the
morgue.
It wan that of an old man. There
were snow aud frost in tho gray locks—
the thin Angers wore elenohed—tho j
team had frozen ns they welled np to j
the poor old eyes. They had found him
dead on tho street—dead and frozen. A
shadow stood beside tho marblo slab—
it bent over tho dead and kissed the oolil
cheek—it sobbed and grieved as only I
a mother grieves, and we Boomed to 1
hear the words:
"Thia was the habo in its cradle—the
youth panting for renown—tho yonng
man winning his first crown—tho strong
man at whose foot tho nation bowed like
slaves-—this was my son 1”
And mou handled tho poor old body :
as if it were a faggot, aud they mock
ingly oriod to each otlior:
"A pine coffin—a grave in potter’s
field—and to-morrow wo forget that liu

Question of Legal Marriage.
Tho United States Circuit Court in
Providence, R. T., ordered n decision in
tho civic of Hiiruli D. Mathewson against
the I’honix Iron Foundry, for rights of
dower, which Ims excited much interest
hern. In 1K59 Henry 0. Mathewson and
UibVoinpliilunnt in tho present suit en

Mathewson was then wealthy, but after
ward disposed of some of bis property.
Hinee his death his wife has uutcred a
.\lii!m of dower in an estate near the bur
bot line in the city of Providence, sold
to tlm I'lienix Iron Foundry, claiming
that she did not sign away her rigid of
dower. The defendants claim that tho
marriage was not in conformity to tho
statute law, and was consequently v- id.
The decision of tho court was that t!n>
agreement constituted a marriage hy
common law, anil that the oomplninaiit
is therefore entitled to dower in the
estate.

"I have been devoting tho lost fon
years to thin subject. I found ont, in
the first, place, that tlio virus rablepv,
loses its Intensity hy transmission to cer
tain animnls, nud increases its intensity
tiy transmission to otlior animals. With
tlio rabbit, for instance, tho virwi
rabique increases; with the monkey it
decreases. My method was ns follows :
I took tho virus direct from the brain of
a dog that had died from nouto hydro
phobia. With thia vims l inoculated a
monkey. The monkey died.
"Tlion with tlio virns—already weak
cued in intensity—taken from this mon
key T inoculated a second monkey. Then
with tlio vims taken from the second
monkey I inoculated a third nionkoy,
nml no on until I obtained a virus so
weak as to bo almost harmless. Then
with this almost harmless virus I inocu
lated a rabbit, the virus being at onoo
increased iu intensity.
"Then with the virus from the first
rabbit I inoculated a second rabbit, and
there was another increase in tho inten
sity of the viruH, Then with the virus
of Iho second rabbit I inoculated a
third rabbit, then a fourth, until the
virus hint regained its maximum inten
sity. Tims 1 obtained virus of different
degrees of power. I then took a dog
and inoculated him, first with tho weak
est virus from tho rabbit, then with the
virus from tho second rabbit, and finally
with tlio rabbit virus of maximum inten
sity. After a few dayB more I inoculated
the dog with vims taken directly from
tho brain of a dog that had just died of
acute madness. Tho dog upon which I
had exiH>rimented proved completely in
susceptible to hydrophobia. The ex
periment was frequently repeated, al
ways with tho same successful result.
"Hut my discovery did not end hare.
I took two dogs aud inoculated them
both with vims taken direotly from a
dog that had just died of aento hydro
phobia. I let one of my two dogH thus
inoculated alone, and ho went mad snd
died of acute hydrophobia. I subjected
the second dog to my treatment, giving
him the three rabbit inoculations, 1 Mi-
ginning with tho weakest and ending'
with tho strongest. This second dog
v;ia completely cured, or rather became
completely insusceptible to hydro
phobia.”
