THE AMERICAN SOLDIER.
“Some years ago I visited some of the
monasteries of the monks of St. Bernard |
for the purpose of seeing the manner in
which these famous dogs are trained to
their life work,” said a famous dog-
trainer. “There I realized for the first
time what a grand, noble thing the
eduoAtion of even a dog mr.y bo when it
has a high and lofty aim. The monks
begin to teach their dogs in the oarllost
stages of pnppyliood, and not only is
physical and mental training included
in this teaching, but spiritual culture is
by no means neglected. At meal iitno
the dogs sit in a row, each with a tin
dish beforo him containing his repast.
Oraee is said by one of the monks, tho

On entering the offloc and making his
wishes known, says an intelligent United
States soldier, the recruit is taken to a
side room, stripped and examined by
the doctor, after which an outfit of
clothes,consisting of blouse, cap,drawers,
stockings,* shirt, shoes, pants, and
blanket, is issued to him. He signs a
blank form for the clothes he has just
drawn, his signature being wituessed by
the officer. A note at the bottom of the
form declares that all spaces not used to
denote articles drawn shall have a red
ink line drawn through them, to prevent
any person having charge of tho same
from inserting other articles of clothing
than those drawn after the blank has
been signed. This filling is never done
nnd when tho recruit reaches his com
pany he is apt to find himself charged
with clothes ho never drew, and is truly

“The intelligence displayed by tlioso
animals in rescuing travelers is simply
marvelous, though perhaps you will say
it is only memory that they show, for
all that they do lias been most carefully
taught them by tho monks. After a
severo snow-storm or an avalanche two
dogs are sent out from the monastery
Around tho neck of one is fastened a
flask of cordial and to the back of tho
other is hound a heavy blanket. If n
traveler lies buried in tho snow tlicir
keen scent soon brings them to him.
Then they search for the place where
the snow is softest, for they know tlint
it is tho warmth of the traveler’s breath
that has made it so and that beneath
that spot must lie his bend. They
scratch away tho snow and when the
unfortunate’s liend and breast nro ex
posed they devote all their efforts to
arousing him from that lethargic slum
ber into which he has fallen, the sure
precursor of that terrible cud—freezing
to death. With their powerful pawH
they smite him on tho chest and face.
With their mouths close to his ear they
give vent to loud barks and cries.
Meanwhile other dogH, accompanied by
the monks, have loft tho monastery
a short time after the former ones,
whose trail they follow, tho result being
tlint the almost frosen trnvelar soon
finds himself well-housed and fed and
restored to warmth and life.”

A farmer can never certainly know what
piaster will do for him till he tries it on
his own fields. There is hardly a farm
crop whiob, if everybody’s testimony
oiin be aooepted, is not under some con
ditions improved by a dressing of this
substance; and, on tho other hand,
there is not a farm crop that has not
failed on somebody's land to givo any
satisfactory return for snob an applica
tion. Very few advocate it for potatoes;
its use on clover is more common than
on any other crop, while there are many
witnesses to its excellent* effeot on In
dian corn nnd grain—applied on corn in
(he spriug when it is two or three inches
high, u tublcspoonful to tho hill, and on
wheat in the tall. It will not do any
good on a jHxir soil, for it is not mannro
itself; in general, it only helps the crop
to make a hotter nse of the plant food
provided for it in the soil or in real ma
nures. A bushel to the aero is a com
mon dressing, while some apply twice
or even three times as much; on grass a
bushel applied at least once a year is re
garded ns better than a larger quantity
even at longer Intervals. A moderately
j dry soil is far more likely to give a good
return for plaster than a wet one; on
the other hand moist weather after it is
applied is welcomed as beneficial.

A Woman Frightens a Panther,
The Brookvillo Crescent tells this
singular story: What came near being a
tragedy occurred on Salt Lake River on
Thursday a week ago. Mr. Shiver,
well knowu in this part of Florida, was
absent from home on business, and his
wife, after attending to her household
duties, hud seated herself uear the door
at her sewing, while her littlo one played
around ou the floor, near at hand.
Ilsaring a slight noise, Mrs. Shiver
looked around and saw crouched within
a dozen feet of her and her baby an im
mense panther, ready to spring. With
a shriek she sprang to her feet and
dashed tho heavy shears with which she
was cutting her work in tho panther's
face, snatched her ehild, end rushed
back into tho house. The panther, dis
concerted by the sudden attack and tho
I noise, beat a deliberate retreat for tho
swamp.

His expectation was that he oonld es

was frustrated. When he was rolled
into the express office at tho depot a
still worso misfortune attended him, for
the box was so placed that he stood on
his head. The clerk then began check

stood it as long as he oonld and then 4

frightening the agent, who was going to
shoot into the box. At length, however,
they released him. He paid the ex
