H’Aile in the Ordinary’s oftlce, on
Tuesday last,, we heard Mr Tlieo
(lore Turk, of Canton, Oil, a broth
er of Mr. St. A. Turk, who died in
this county, on Saturday, remark,
that he was 7. r > years of age, and
during that period tie had never
drank a drum, swore an oath, had a
ditliculty with any one, nor hud
been xued, nor sued anybody. This
s|K-aks for itself, and brings to our
mind the quotation, “Murk the per
fect man, for the end of that man is
peace.”— Oainesi'ille EayU
In some of the counties of the
State much complaint is being made
at the low valuation of property
being returned in for taxation.
Cherokee is by no means exempt
irnni this class of swindling, v.e
use rather a severe term, but such it
is when a man, men corporation
give in valuable property for less
than one-half its real value or what
the same parties asks for the prop
erty when on the market for sale.
It is not only swindling the •State
and the county but the poor huuest
hard working man who has but lit
tle property and gives it in at its
true value. W e renew the sugges
tion made by many of our exchanges
that the State should adop some
law seeuriug a more truthful valua
tion of property returned for taxu
tion. Simply an oath don’t do it.

the columns of your wide awake an
independent journal in tiehulf of ol
George F. Gober; Solicitor-General
of this district. As the time ap
proaches for the election of a suc-
cossor to this officer by the Legisla
ture, the people of this jiidicinl cir
cuit are becoming anxious for Col.
Gober to be his own successor. He
has been a most faithful, fearless and
judicious officer, reflecting credit
upon the people and himself alike.
All of the grand juries in the dis
trict have unheshatingly recom
mended his re-election except that
of Forsyth which recommends Geo.
Bell, Esq., who is a candidate and
lives in that county. The people
have nothing again, t Mr Bell or
any one else in the matter, but they
are much inclined to keep a faith
ful and ex]ierioiicod officer when
