AN IN YEN Tull'S PERIL,
The lane, leading east from Chatham*
I afreet, is sometimes called Golosh
street. It is a greasy, sodden, dirt-laden
- place, crowded with junk shopped sec-^,
I ond-liand clothing stores. Bt. Vruiu,
i tho inventor, for a long time oocupied
tho top floor of N6.' 19. It, was n large,
Unfinished loft, with flaked, smoko-
stained, cobw'obbed rafters overhead,
and two dingy, windows looking down on
tho Goloshiiiu -pavement, with its seven'
distinct strata of dirt. Bince HT. Vrain "
, had hired this comfortless garret, ten
years before^ no foot of stranger had
entered it, not even that of his land
lord. Only*. after nightfall did thb in
ventor himBelf leave the, place, nor, oven
then, until ho hod looked and double
locked'both his trap-door and the door
at tho .foot of tho stair. Occupying tho
central portion of tho attic, and reach
ing from window to tjindtw, /os itio
machine upon which St. Vrain had spent
his fortune. At oaoli end of the room
was an upright, cylindrical mass of
metal, covered with polished knobs of
silver, conueotod together by wiros, and
insolated from tho floor by plates of
glass. The metal was steel, but it was
steel which had been submitted to a
costly and Becret process, and treated
with various chemicals, for a pnrposo
now to science. In the space between
these lingo cylinders, each one fifteen
foot high, were retorts, blowpipes; work-'
benches,- and all the .tools Of an expert
chemist, nlsO a forge, and the tools of a
worker in metal. When one examined
jnoro eloboly tho lingo steel cylinders, it
was seen that they were mode of small
plates riveted together, and, lingo ns
tho task seeniod, it was evident that ono
man’s unaided labor had' p/oducMl it.
. Bt. Vrain sat beside his work-table,
one night in August, nud looked at tho
cylinders of Hteol. Ho tonchod a knob,
close at band, and a soft, lambent flame
begtin to play about each. Tho dull
metal hecamo fairly luminous, nud a
delicate sound, clear and vibrant as that
of -an jEolittn harp, stirred the dull air,
“It is done,” said St. Vrain, “and the

eo’d cylinder, tho one lie had likened to
tho Boilth Pole. ; Gently, firmly, rever
ently, as if in tho prcseUije of a mighty
force, ho put his hand upon a groat
brown knob, a fid listened. He opened
a curving-dOoT—-tho cylinder was hollow.
A dull smoke, like dust or opium, strug
gled out, and for a second ho staggered
os against tho influence of sleep.
“Ah ! tho pores of tho steel boxes
oak a little still," ho said, as ho
thrust the yelping dog inside nnd closed
tho door upon him.
8t> Vrain went to the other cylinder
and, opening tho door, peered in. A I
warm and ffagrnut nnd inspiriting
breath ruslied oht. Ho closed it and re
turned to the first one. Four silver
knobs were closo to his hand, no spoke,
as if explaining tho mysteries of tho
mcohnnism to astrnnger.
‘ Now, when I touch the first knob,
my Solvent Force will operate, nnd pain

out through mo nonow wiiflo wire, and
into the second cylinder, arriving tlioro
long before they hnvo lost any of their
mutual attraction, ,.or relationship

last knob, Rio cylinder door will open
and lie will .step out, his accustomed
cur-ship, unconscious that henceforth
ho is immortal, as the first living creatnro
that was’telegraphed through space."
The invontor’s eyes glowed and ids
form dilated, Ho touched” the fOnr
knobs, one after another, as rapidly as a
musician would strike four consecutive
notes. The door of the second cylinder,
sixty feet distant, clanged open, the dog
sprang out, and came to Bt.' Vrain at ilia
call. About the animal’s neck was the
paper roll. He opouod it, read tho mom-
orafldi, anil ArteiV aloud in ocstftBy ,,,T1 h*i

Ho found a largo, sheet of coarse

below, roturniflg with a miserable cur,
i which he had cajoled upstairs with a
j bit of bread...
St. Vrain now .touched another kuob.
The light th*t shone from, one of the
tub .cylinders grew brighter and its color
varied from pale pearl and clear opal to
lemon and orange, rotje and crimson and
tremulous violet; thb 1 light that shone
from the other changed'to a sombre and
inexpressibly mournful tint, from ono
came a sense of jpj ; oud warmth ahd vi
tality, from the other a sense of pain,
and cold, and decay. *
“Life and Death, North and South

hia feet, and hastily bcrawling a few
w ords on a scrap of paper, tied it by
“All right, capt’n, I’ll go aboard.
Money - all gone. Timo to ship for
‘uother v’y’ge,”
Then St. Vrain hustled him upstairs,
nnd, opening tho door of the second cyl
inder, thrust him in a momcht, till the
vital emanation f* mu'its walls somewhat
sobered him. A few minutes later St,
Vrain and tho igporant stood before tho
mysterious door over which tho four sfl—
- ver knobs gjpamod.
“Now,* ! said,St. Vrain, “I nm trying
an experiment ■ of great importance.
When I ppen the door and step in and
, close ij;, you [must touch, one after nti-
otfter, these knobs marked ono, two,
three and four.”
And ho made the man go through
with this opefntion several times,, till
sbfe that he understood it.
, ‘‘‘When I come out, which will-b©-’as
soon as you touch the last knob, I'will
give you, instead of twenty dollars, the
- ane-hundred-dbllar bill that I hold in
nay hand;’’ '• <
St. Vrain stepped into tho dark cylin
der' armed with a hrru will, and antici
pating tbfc astonishment of the sailor
when he should step forth from the
other.'. Hp closed it, and the man in
stantly reached up to the four knobs.
He pressed the first; St. Vrain was
whirled into the depths of total uncon
sciousness. Dizzy, however, with the
returning effects of his potations and
with the atmosphere from the interior
of the cylinder, the sailor failed to press
the second knob and open up communi
cations ; ho pressed the third, and a
soft light filled tho room; he pressed
the fourth, and the second door opened,
the light ceased ; again the Vital Force
revived his whiskey-sodden brain to ac
tivity.to No St. Vrain returned. He
waited fifteen minrftes, and he tried to
open the door of the oyliuder, but failed
completely. Then he pressed the first
knob again. Tne ronr as of n whirl wind
followril, and (he room begun to trem
ble mmer foot; ho had released a double
portion of tho droralful Solvent Force,
tho second silver wire boann to hum
like telegraph wires in a storm. To
hato pressed tho other knobs would
hayo restored St. Vrain’s atomized body
and ..floating soul to normal relations,
but the shaking of tho room frightened
the sailor from further experiment in
that uirection. no saw another knob
upon the oyliuder, marked five, and
pressed it in total desperation.
TlW third wire between the cylinders
throw forth mighty rays and foot-long
eleotiio sparks. Both cylinders toppled
fofwjtrd, and toward each other, and, as
they fell, crashing, tlioy melted under the
frightened sailer’s sight, first into flying
fragments of iron, nnd then into fnint
and disappearing flakes of iron-rust.
The Solvent Foreo nnd tho Vital Force,
released, and rushing into each other's
embrace, had naturally destroyed each
other, and somewhere in the dust-sown
particles of tho dingy garret, into w hich
tho earliest sunlight was just beginning
to shino, wero tho ntoms that half an
hour before had made up S*. Train, tho
greatest inventive genius the world had
known.
Tho trembling sailor lied from tho
spot in wild terror, nud Was on shipboard
and at sen before another daybreak.
Deeper dust gathorod on the walls nnd
books and forgo; the rain drove in at the
open window, and fit. Vrain’s blankets
molded and decayed nioytb nftc.r month.
At lost tho quarterly rent-day came,
nnd passed, and Bt. Vrain, for tho first
time for ten years aud three ‘ntorths,
failed to appear. The gruff, unshaven
receiver of stolen goods who owned tho
building was delighted.
' Dot quocr man promiso to pay
double J rent, so long as I never ask
questions about hia pis’noss. I dinks ho
counterfeit mouoy. Now I mnko him

garret, took possession of his goods,
tools, and -curiosities and ultimately sold
them. Tho receiver of tho stolon goods
