Diri»,—On (he morning of Febru
ary the let, Mr. J. W. Stone died of
typhoid fever, after having kept his
bed nineteen days. During his en
tire sickaes* he admonished his
friends aad relatives to live right
and get ready for death. He seemed
to be conscious of death and that
something told hint to talk. He
manifested no fear (or the futare
and quietly pawed away, as if juat
going to sleep.
R. A- Stone and children, Benson
Kuox, Joti. Knox, and the children
«f Jus. W. Knox who have been
sick, are all aauch improved.
R. 9. Stone who liaa been confin
ed to hi# bed with pneumonia fever
we learn is improving.
Mrs. Sally Knox, wife of Rensoa
Knox, fell from a carriage the ‘2nd

Hardin, who nkillfully treated bar
aad she is getting along finely.

wh > went to see the President-elect
a few days since seem to be one
and all much pleased with what
they have seen of the coming titan,
who is praised as a courteous listen
er and a frank talker. Affectation
and mysteriousaess are not among
the faults of Mr. Cleveland.
Nothing baa been learned about
the cabinet; it is evidently the inten
tion of the prestdmt to take all the
time tha law allows him to build it,
and since his cabinet can do noth-
until after tha fourth of March, this
deliberation would seem to be prop
er and politic.
A cat tain class af government
clerks ara quietly preparing to go.
They are the chiefs of Hu l ean and
their chief clerks; also a large num
ber who are conscious of their shady
political antecedents. A large ma
jority ara hoping that they may
avoid that fell sweep of the new
broom. The opinion of those who
have a practical knowledge of af
faire in tha Government oMces is
that there ean be no real improve
ment in government wark until nine
tenths af the clerks who are drones
and politicians have been swept out
and been replaced, not necessarily
t y Democrats exclusively, but by
competent men and real workers.
There is a great deal of local talk
about the inauguration, which is
only two weeks distant. The Dem
ocrat# of conrsa, desire that the
parade, the ball, tha fire works, the
decoration and thee owd, shall com
pare ia respectability, taste and
splendor with uny previous similar
occasion. 1 think their vanity w ill
be gratified. There will be a fine
parade of citizen, soldiery aad civic
organizations. The night will be
painted in ull the hues of the rain-
sow by fire works; and the ball, in a
hall large enough to accommodate
twelve thousand, and which any one
can attend for the consideration of
five dollars will be simply stupen
dous.
General Hancock declined to lead
the parade from the White House
te the Capital on the ground of a
recent death in his family, aud Gen
eral McClellan, to whom the houor
was next tendered, declined on ao-
oount of engagements. It is well
enough, for neither of these old gen
tlemen can nit u horse as well as he
could twenty five years ago, and the
lsader of this parade must bestride
a goodly steed. General Slocum
has accepted tha commnnd of the
ephemeral army, and there in no
doubt that the brief campaign will
be successful.
Aa it is anticipated that a greater
number of military 'organziations
and civic associations will be in line
01 the fourth of March than were
ever assembled hero on inauguration
day, tbo task to be assigned to Gen
eral Slocum is not an easy one.
Feur years ago General Sherman,
with a large number of aids, fo ind
the labor of marshaling and moving
tha parade a great undertaxing.
ft is nominally an honor, bat’ in
fact a very labereus responsibility
to aasUmethe direction and move
ment of a vast collectien of organ
ziations in the brieftime allowed for
such a parade.
