wo passed through or by what is
known as tho City Gates, and the
ruins of an old wall, hut when ar l>\
whom these were built there are no
means of ascertaining and lienee
much simeitlation is here furnished
for the antiquarian.
Among the many notable things
in this romantic city is the narrow
streets, fashioned after the manner
of the old Hpiini.li country. They
I vary in width from seven totwimly
foot, and generally intersect each
other at right angles In the older
part of the city the streets are liar
lowest and on some traces of coqui
na paviugwtill remain. In very few
of the streets can two can ridges pass
abreast.
The first place vie visited was
I’mice de I as hi Hotel, now in course
of ennuiruction. This Hotel when
completed will no doubt Isr the most
elegant hotel striic.iuru in America.
The hotel proper covers four and
i half acres of ground; the dining
ro m. which is detached, logcLhci
wit h tlie kitchen and other buildings,
will cover one and a half acres ad
ditional, making in all six acres. It
is estimated that the entile expen
ditures in connection with this hotel
will approach $2,0 hi,non, or more.
Fronting this magnificent hotel is
a beautiful and quecrly constructed
Moorish Castle, and several other
buildings of cm ions interest to a
native North Georgian.
I’assing up the street we stopped a
mom nt to examine the material
with w hich the I'otieede l.eon hot 1
is being iniili, and found it to lie a
kind of concrete manufactured from
a combination of sand, cement, and
coquHiu. It makes a good hard fin
ish, and of its durability there can
lie no doubt.
We then went on lo the I'laza, in
center of the city, and a favorite
park or resting place, in which are
the ruins of the old market, erroue
ously called the “old slav e market,”
the Spanish l.ilier.d Monument,erec
ted in 1812, and the Confederate
Monument, erected hy the ladies a
few years ago, all of which were in
teresting to look upon and to think
of the history connected with them.
Facing the I’laza on the north are
the mins of the old Catholic Cathe
dral, erected in 1791, The front
wall is still standing and in it is a
clnine of four hells and tlie old
clock, forming a perfect cross. One
of these liells Ileal'S the dale of Itlsti
and is sup|>osed to be the oldest in
the country.
From there we visited Fort Mari
on, at the north end of tlie town.
This building was commenced in
THE SUNDAY SCHOOL.

w Idch follow have to do with iiiiiii'h ditties hi

Tiir. I.KHHOf*.
The Fifth Commandment (v. 12).—The
duty to parents Is reckoned nest to the duty
to find. While among sotno |soph's, as the
(’hiuese, the honor of parents and nnceetora
haslss omea rrligiouM rite, yet among some
of the heathen aged and helpless j mi rents are
neglect*d hy their children in the most cruel
way.
The fifth commandment really enjoins obe
dience to parents, Iss'inise children cannot
honor them unless they obey them, ami adds
tilt' promise of long life.
One of the greatest dangers of our age end
country is In a lack of reverchco. In the
tendency to break down all nodal distinctions,
and to *|»cnk evil of intnoiir occupying high
|N>sitioiiH, there is danger of an undue
familiarity arising between parent* and
children, in which tlie child forgets that he is
it child, mid the reverence due to age and ex-
|M*| ielice.
It would 1st well If something of the re
s|H*ct with which tho young Rcduwin, and
even tlie Indian I my, treats his father, were
found in our Christian communities.
The Sixth Commandment (v. i;i>.—The
first step to murder is in tho indulgence of
anger. The man who hates another so that
lie would strike him down If lie dared is al
ready a murderer in his heart (Matt, v, 22;
I John iii, 15). It is only a question of time,
place and opportunity as to whether he will
take the life of the one he hate*.
The sixth commandment, however, Is as
truly directed against self murder ns the
murder of others. None hut Cod, or the
guurdiuna of justice who serve iti the concep
tion of the Nww Testament by divine appoint
ment (Rom. xiii, 1-1), or those who are coin
Polled to defend themselves against lawless
men, have a right to take human life.
The Seventh Commandment (v. U).—The
boy who reads the records of sensual In
dulgence und looks at lewd pictures is prepar
ing to break this commandment. Thu young
man who tells indecent stories or listens to
them is not only guilty of a grave offense
against, propriety, hut is preparing himself to
he an adulterer. All conversation and lie
huvior between young men and women that
suggest* impurity, unless checked, may pre-
l>uie the way for adultery.
When the heart has once given consent
man is guilty. All lustful thoughts, as well
as words and deeds, are to Inn avoided (Matt,
v, 28). There is no age in the world’s hi*tor)
when tho seventh commandment is not of the
utmost iiii|M>rtaiice, and the higher tlie civili
xution, wealth and luxury of a country, un
less society is ) ton orated by vital godliness,
the greater the temptation to lucuk it.
The Eighth Commandment (v. 15).—There
are many kinds of stealing, and this coin
uiuudmeiit is directed against them all. A
man steals when he takes that which does not
belong to him. Slavery has been abolished
in America. The negro is no longer stolen,
but there is greut danger in the desire to get
something for nothing lest multitudes should
enslaved in great cities. It seems like theft
w hen women work from early in tlie morning
until late at night for starvation wages.
On the other hand, many a young muii hu>
taken his employer’s money because he
wanted better clothe* or fell in with laid
companions. In modern society this com
mandmriit is being constantly broken.
The Ninth Coinmundim nt (v. 10). —“Thou
hbalt not answer against thy neighbor unto a
he” (Hebrew). The Hebrew word for lie is
rouge (sba que), tho color sometimes used to
impart tho bloom of youth to the fuded
cheek.
This commandment is directed not only
u, linst false witness, but also against all
f«»i ms of gi»ssip. It is a safe rule not to talk
must not torget tiiat even In tlie religion of
Jesus fear has a place.
