What la The Matter?
The AhVanck, since it* first issue
in 1880, has never lost sight of an
opportunity to speak of the gener
osity, hospitality, enterprise, unit
general desire and determination of
'atoii’s citizens to do all in their
power to make themselves and every
body around them as happy and eon-
tented as the circumstances would
idinitot.
Their very generous and progres
sive spirit is shown in the hlfltdsome
two-story lu iek Academy, the large
and splendid Baptist church edifice,
the subscript ions so freely made and
given to the Kpieopaiians in buying
lot on which to erect a neat little
-htirch, and their interest shown in
and aid given generally in all things
of a public and charitable nature.
Their hospitality and warm wel-
ome has lieen and is shown on al
most every occasion. Ks|ioeially
was it when the town so handsome
ly and easily provided homes for all
delegates and visitors to the last
two Metli idist District t’onfereiiccs
held here in about 1879 and I*n;i,
the two last Noonday Baptist Asxo
ciatioiiH held here the same years;
the Confederate regiments re-unions;
the County Sunday School Associa
tions from time to tune; and at num
erous other times and on divers oc-
miious has the town shown its lios-
piiality, generosity and warm wel
nine extended to all that we always
n-corded the citizens of Canton.
But the committee milking nr
mgements for the entertainment of
lelogates to the North Atlanta Dis
trict Conference soon to ussemhle
liere have found it a difficult mattei
to obtain homes for them as readily
us heretofore.
Judging the town hy what its
itizeim have done in the past, and
the fact that we know them so well,
we are puzzled to understand what
the matter can lie, and hmv ii is thiii
the committee do not Hud homes so
readily. Do you know?
Canton has more citizens than she
ever hud, and her churches have a
irger membership, and we know
all are financially I letter able to care
for all visitors than herctoie.
The gn at number of summer visi
tors, and sickness in several fund
lies we know makes some difference,
yet there are some in town who we
believe are not giving the committee
ill the encouragement they should.
The Baptist, however, are doing
ill that could l>e exjieciedof them.
We know the town can provide
for nil, and, further than that, w<
know it trill do it.

KTUWaH INSTITUTE EXEu-

Last Thursday and Friday was a Imp

with the above named Institute, and
the hundreds of town people ami
visitors who were lookers on and wit
nessed the closing exercises of ttiis
splendid school.
The exorcises In iran on Thursday
night and were well attended by the
town and quite a number from the sur
rounding country. But on Fridas it
appeared as if the couuty hud turned
out en matte, reinforced by large num
bers from ttie neighboring towns —Ma
rietta, Jasper, Ellijiy, Alpharetta and
oiher towus besides, all the townships
iff this couuty, were Well represented —
and every one seemed to enjoy him
self finely.
Prof. M. (1. Bates with his assistants,
had the stage in the rear of the hall in
the second story of the Institute build'
ing beautifully arranged It was tasti
ly decorated with floral hearts, rings,
pictures of rare beauty, arches of ce-
lar extending across the entire end and
on either aide of the hall above the ios
lrum and, underneath the center arch,
were the words “Aon 1‘nlmr, Sine, I’ul
cere,” made in large, plain and pretty
cedar letter*, — meaning that no one can
gain a victory without corresponding
labor, or, litterally, that "no palm is
gained wiliout dust.” Around the
room ami in each window were suspend
ed beautiful Chinese lanterns, which,
with the handsome chandelier suspend
ed over the rostrum and several I imps
in different parts of the room furnished
a bright light.

Thursday evening's programme, from
7:110 to 9 o'clock , consisted of recitations
from the boys aud girls of the Primary
Department. Twenty-eight— 14 girls ami
14 boys -recited, and each one did well
and reflected great credit upon him or
licrrelt ami teachers Ho well did they
recite their different pieces that it was
a difficult mattei lor the committee ap
pointed to award the prizes for the four
best recitstious, to say to whom the.

three best among the girls were Misses

accordingly delivered in a well worded

All the forenoon of Friday was taken

Material Improvements.
The great number and very pressing
leiuaud of applicants for board in Cau
tun duriug the present summer has been
unprecedented iu the hi-tory of the
place, and the hotels and boarding Inmse-
are now crowded and compelled to turn
iff applicants for hoard every week.
In view of this 51 r Li I is lias decided to

commodious house, ami be better pre
pared next xummor to accommodate visi
tors than ever before. 1I« will add an-
it her story and anvil, and already lias
placed the order for purl of the material
uece-ssary.
It is very likely that C'apt. McAfee
will make some additions to the JfcAfee
House, so as to give more room and ac
commodate a larger number during the
next winter and summer Ilian his two
story brick, 25-room, house can uow
accommodate.
besides these improvements to be
made for tlie accommodation sf our visi
tors there are other changes that are
ami will be made in town.
Dr. T. W. Hogan has already begun
to remodel his dwelling and make some
m-eded additions to it, which he will
have done in a few weeks.
John H. Bell recently bought the va
cunt lot adjoining the house in which
he now lives and intends putting up s
dwelling on it iu a shart while.
B. F. Crisler is painting and other
wise beautifying his residence aud
premises.
Hou. fieorge R. Brown intends build
ing a brick law office east of the hotel
on the same lot.
And, besides these, there are otliei
additions, changes and improvements
for the better continually goiDg ou that
permanently adds to the growth, pros

Although there was a large crowd pres

present, hut, of course, they dbl not
mean by their absence that they felt m
interest in their children or wards an
lid not care to know how they were ad
vancing. Yet it was noticeable.
It was expected that Hou. Hill Glenn,
ol Dalton , and Gen . Phillips, of Mariet
ta, would deliver addresses in the after
-on, but for some unknown reason toils
neither appeared. We don’t think the
mdience lost much though, for the ad
dress of Col. John 1). Attsway on "In
tellect” was a most interesting and ap
preciative one. It was remarkably hap

iliiuk Glenn oi Phillips would have said
Oelter or more timely things than did

Impromptu speeches were made by
Rev. Ledbetter, of Wulesca High School
on Progress, aud Rev. Huckahce. of Kasl

Its Needs and Possibilities, and right
happily did they express themselves.
After the addresses followed Declama
tions and Orignal Speeches, all of which
w<>re good ami showed caietul prepara
tion. Especially were the original
speeches of M. M. Wcathurby aigt c. F.
oantrell good and well delivered.
Music was lurnishe 1 during the day by
Jas. A. Low, of Hall Ground, on the or
gan, ami Prut. Hates on the violin, and
in the svening by Miss Lula, Mr, J u^ge
J. and Prut. 51. G- Bates, Also a few
stirringairs from the canton c iruet Hand.
'Ike evening exercises consisted of rec
Rations, compositions and plays. The
recitations were good, the compositions
splendid, and all the plays laughingly
laughable.
The Valedictory by Miss Daisy Crisler
aud the closing exercises by a number of
other sweet little girls, in bidding the
audience "Good bye,” were very beauti
