HV? Cherokee county, Geoiioia, is situated on the Marietta and
North Georgia lailroad, 24 miles north of Marietta, on the Western and Atlautio
railroad, aud 45 milea north of Atlnntn, the Ntute capital. A crescent is formed on
»h« north and west of the town by the Etowah river, which liver is navigable lower
down. 1 he town ia situated on an eminence at an elevation of about 1,100 feet
above aea level, and there is not a healthier place in Georgia. It is an old, hiatori-
i*'il»s"' having yeara ago been headquarters of the Indians. It was first chartered
in 1833 as Etowah, hut subsequently changed to its pre>.»nt name. During the
“war between the states" it wus almost wholly destroyed by fire. It has since
built up, and presents now a handsome appearance. The streets are wido aud
vdiaded and ita principal houses substantially built of brick. It now has an esti
mated population of 600, only about one-tenth of whom are colored. 'I here are
here splendid btiok churches of Baptist and Methodist denominations; the Episco
palians have a lot and contemplate erecting a chapel thereon, and the Presbyter
ians hold monthly services in the Methodist church. The Etowiih Institute is a
large, two-.tory brick building, naw and specially adapted to the educational
wants of this section, aud supplied with all needed apparatus aud a corps of com
petent teachers.
A large, two-storv brick hotel, containing twenly-fivo rooms, gives splendid
accommodation at clieau rates. Tliorp are also a number of private hoarding
houses. There is a large, three-story brick flouring mill, with other manufactur
ing enterprises ; also a fino livery stable stocked with good horses mid vehicles,
'iho county property here is a large and magnificent two-story brick courthouse, a
two-story brick jail, and within a half-mile of the courthouse a farm consisting of
18(t acres and having thereon a number of good buildings for the proper care of the
county’s poor. By special enactment of the legislature, no whiskey is allowed to
be sold within two nules of the place ; there are no gaming houses nor other placoa
of vicious amusement; the town is quiet, orderly and peaceable, having no cala
boose nor any use for one. Canton presents many advantages over other towns.
It lias the benefit of railrond and telegraph communications and daily mails north
snd south. Tho Etowah river passing nt the hasa of the town, noar the depot, af
fords nmole opportunity for bathing, boating or fishing, ami presents fine water
powers. The woods near town are full of sinnll game and afford splendid hunting
grounds. Nestling in the beautiful and picturesque mountain district of North
Georgia, it is protected from the extreme chilly blasts of winter, while in the hot
summer mouths the cool mountain breezes make it a most pleasant summer resort.
Near town are magnificent springs of mineral waters, notably among them an alum
spring of known curative powers.
OHBH/OKEB aOTTUSTT^T.
Is situated in the western part of North Georgia, 70 miles from the North Carolina
and Tennessee lines, and is bounded by ttie counties of Piekenson the North, Daw-
eon and Forsyth on the east, Milton nnd Cobb oil the south, slid Bartow on ilia
west. 11 is one of the )>est of the twenty-one counties comprising what is kno^h
ns Cherokee Georgia, or that portion of the stato lying northwest of the Chatta
hoochee river, aud contains 470 square miles. It is the original Cherokee, from
which the other twenty counties have been cut off since its purchase from the
.milium in 1838. By virtue of its climate, healthfulness, soil, crops, water jaiwera,
minerals, society, transportation nnd telegraphic facilities and political liberality, it
stands second to none. The richest liuula are to he fnuud in the valleys, of course,
but the magnificent timber that clothes the hillsides shows that strong, productive
so l is not wanted there as well. Almost every character of soil known to tho state
enn he found within the limits of the county, from the dark alluvial of the river
and creek bottoms to the light gruy or mulatto lands of the uplands, and all are
iqually productive and responsive to tare and good tillage. All the products of
the nortn can lie successfully grown here, in audition to those of the south. 'Ihe
cereals, wheat, oats, corn, barley, rye, all the grasses and especially clover, find
here a congenial home. Cotton is the principal money crop; tobacco form-an
important one, supplying some half dozen or more factories in the county. With
abundant dreams of never-failing, pure water and a mild climate, this can be made
a nursery for mules, horses and cattle to supply the great northwestern markets,
and is here being successfully demonstrated. All thereby making it one of the
most attractive aud desirable counties in North Georgia. Tho county ia lacking in
more labor and money. With more of each the inexhaustible agricultural and
mineral resources would soon he turned into greater wealth and usefulness, The
mineral wealth of tliia county is varied and exliaustless and, as yet, even unknown
to us. Prominent among the minerals found deposited here are gold, silver, iron,
manganese, copper, coal, mica, asbestos, lend, marble, slate, etc. Our water power
is exceptionally good. The Etowah and Inttlo rivers each possess many thousands
of available horse powers, beside that furnished by the numerous creeks. Tito va
riety of fertile aud productive lands, and minernla and superior water powers are
not so gtcat as the pure water, good health and equitable climate with which Ihe
citizens of Chsrokee are blessed. The healthfulness of the county cannot be sur-
pa-sed, being entirely free fiom all msltrial influences—a case of chills hnving
never been known to originate in this county. Our atmosphere is exceptionally
fine, tlie winters not being rigidly cold nor the summers oppresaively hot. The
religious and educational advantages of lhe county are splendid, there being
churches and school houses in short distances of each other all over the county.
The county now lias an estimated population of 16,000, of whom 1,100 are colored.
Our citizens are all intelligent, eocial, moral and industrious. The Marietta and
North Georgia railroad passes through the entire county from south to north, and
along its line are the towns of Woodstock, Too Ny, Holly Springs, Canton (Ihe
county seat), Mabel and Ball Ground in this county. Besides these towns there
are Cherokee Mills, Hickory Fiat, Ophir, Orange, Moore’s Mills, Kutallee.Walesca,
Sharp Top, Salacoa, Laredo, Macedonia and Fort Buffington. Ail the above towus
aud the surrounding country are peopled by thrifty, energetic and wide-awake citi
zens. No whiskey is sold in bar rooms in the county, and none except by the
pallon. 'there are veveral manufacturing establishments in the county.
To all who may pay Chcrokeo county a visit »« will pledge a warm welcome, and it they will
st tile, a hearty co-operation from our people. For further information regarding this section

was a strong steel pulley, through which
ran a light lim rvlemliiig from an iron
reel made find lo tin-arm of the great

iron itook. To this book was attached a
large tin vessel, r, -milling in shape a
monster syringe. II re In-gun tho most
dangerous part of tlm work, and tho
spectators were warned t<> leave tlm
ground. Tlm cans were brought into
the derrick and thirty-two quarts of tho
terrible explosive, formed by treating
glycerine with concentrated sulphuric
and nitric acids, were carefully poured
into the tin torpi do. Tliia was slowly
lowered into the well by aid of tlm reel,
great care being taken to see tlmt it did
not jar violently against the casing and
cause a premature explosion. ^ ben tlm
bottom of the well was reached tlm hook
was sw ung Icmihc nnd the lino drawn out.
Caliban then filled .mother till vessel of
smaller capacity, aluipcd very much liko
a gun cartridge, and atlaelied it a deton
ating fuse. Tin* glycerine cans contain
ing the small residue of Gm explosive,
were removed to a place of safety, faiii-
han then entered the derrick with his
“go-devil,” coolly lighted the fuse from
his cigar, dropped it in tlm well and
slowly walked a few rods away. Kvory-
body lield their breath and waited. A
minute pi sod two three, Inexperi
enced persons thought Gin shot had
failed, and approached nearer tlie well.
Presently there was a dull, heavy thud,
much like striking a meal hag with one’s
closed list. There was a slight tremor
or tho earth, barely perceptible to those
nearest the well, T lien followed ano
ther wait of lift seconds when a great
volume of black colored water shot up,
up away over the derrick a hundred
feet in ail, falling with a great shadow
of stones and drenching tlm moro ven-
turoHome spectators who rushed toward
the well.
The effect of the shot was at once dis-
oernable. The well was a good ono 1m-
fore, but the deep, sullen roar from the
tive-aml-iivc-ciglitl: inch casting an
nounced a find perhaps exceeding in
I volume any well yet drilled in tlm Ko
komo Held. When Gm union was put
on and connection with a two inch pipe
was marie, the roar increased to a hoarse
scream, almost drowning tlm mighty
shout that went up when tho go* wae
won lighted, throwing out a flame nearly
\ to the top of tlm derriok.

The amount of provisions, groceries,

Where Lightning Strikes.
From itutistics collected in parts of
tlie German empire, G. flellmnnn find*
that tho danger from lightning, though
generally increasing, is diminishing in
certain districts, tho r.slc becoming Isas
the moro closely houses are clustered.
The character of tho soil has great in
fluence. Letting 1 represent tho danger
from lightning on calcareous ground, 2
will give it upon marly, 9 upon saudy,
nnd 22 upon clnycy soil. It is a curious
fact, not yet explained, that oaks are
struck much more frequently than other
ticos; bo that if the danger for beeches
be 1, that for pines is 15, and for oaks
54.
